    Oil cooler

Hi, I live in the UK but own an Australian import 91 Golf GTI with RV engine code. I recently replaced the faulty oil temperature sender and discovered that the oil temp is going through the roof when I administer abuse. All of the PB engine code Mk2's I've had were fitted with a plate style oil cooler between the oil filter and filter housing where this car hasn't got one. Does anyone know if Aus spec RV engine codes were fitted with coolers as standard? I'm wondering if mine has leaked at some stage in its life and been removed. Any info is greatly appreciated. Cheers

I have only just replaced the sensor and have seen temps over 110 C with some spirited driving and 100 C with normal driving. I have driven it much harder in the summer months so god knows what temp the oil was getting to then. The PB models with the cooler fitted I've had in the past run at about 88 - 92 C during normal driving and I rarely saw over 105 C when giving it death.

    Hey Sid

I was about to put one on mine. I currently get around 118 when driving along.

That said when you turn the fan on on the freeway the temp jumps up 10 deg to 130 so maybe I will try a new oil sensor first.

That said are you able to show me what you need to fit one?

    Cheers

Hi Benough, unfortunately I can't seem to upload photos. I think this function may be blocked because I'm new on here and a foreigner. I'll try and explain as best I can although it might be a long read!

A problem you might encounter is that mk2's with oil coolers have an extra outlet from the bottom of the plastic flange on the front of the cylinder head and another outlet from the metal water pipe just before it goes into the pump. These connect via hoses to the oil cooler. You would have to source and fit these first. Mine has these connections but they are plugged off with hose and copper tubing. I don't think this would have been a standard fitment so you may not have them on yours. The other possible problem is that you need a filter housing with the extended pipe inserted. The standard RV housing just has a short nipple that the oil filter screws to. This needs to be about 3-4" (75 - 100mm) long to allow the cooler to sit in place above the filter. I managed to pick up a filter housing off ebay with this longer pipe installed but I'm not sure what parts availability is like in Aus.
Also required is an O ring to seal between the cooler and filter housing. A thin nut (half nut) that holds the cooler in place. I think its 3/4" UNF, same as the oil filter thread. I've heard of people not putting this nut on and just horsing up the filter. This means everytime you change the oil filter, the cooler will come loose as well so I'd advise fitting one if you can but you can get away without it.
The oil cooler and the two hoses should be available from the dealer as I'm pretty sure the same cooler was used on other models but I'd check elsewhere also as they can sometimes charge a fortune. I would advise you not to use a second hand cooler if possible. If it cracks internally it can allow oil into your water or water into your oil. Either way its messy.

Hope this helps and hasn't put you off.

Well I am sure that would be less daunting/confusing if I saw pictures or someone pointed it out for me under a bonnet.

I will PM you my email address and you could email the pics/I can post them up?

The upload section of the forum has been de-activated as far as i know.

just use an imagehosting site such as www.imageshack.us or www.imagehost.org and post the link to the picture here between the image tags [img] [/img]
