    Question ODO woes

Hey people, I have a weird and wonderfull problem with my passat, I know it's not a mk2 golf, but it's a 90 model so I figured it will get the most love in this section.
Now the problem is the ODO rather than registering one km as one km, is registering 100m as 100km, see the pictures for proof.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? As the old passat has covered about 40 thousand kms in the space of 2 months(or so) driving, could possibly make it the worlds fastest passat. Some pics taken seconds apart, some taken a few mins apart.

You are gonna have to take the speedo apart. I suspect a broken tooth.

    Agreed

Yeah....Could be a lot of things including a weak return spring. I don't like your chances of fixing it without replacing the speedo head. Where would you get one in Oz?? There'll probably be ones on ebay UK but they'll be in miles. Loon, would any of the Golf or Audi speedo heads fit?

I reckon that its a golf speedo under there. if you have one to canibalise, you can probably make one good one from the two.

The clocks look the same as my VR6 Passat, the speedo bit is probably the same as Golf, but just has different water and temp gauges.

The numbers are on rolling barrels that turn around an axle. There are little "tags" that kick the next barrel over when its time. At around 300ks its common for the barrels to begin slipping on the axle. Its probably that or some associated looseness causing the problem.
You can have a go at fixing it yourself but they are delicate little f**rs and if it jumps out of your hand onto the floor then ...! Everything is made under a VW licence so you can only buy the complete instrument if that happens.

I'd recommend handing the complete cluster to VDO. Around $110 ... with a guarantee.

You could possibly try and find a replacement here
    http://search.ebay.de/search/search....e=Passat+Tacho
Usually I have asked if they can send to Australia and 95% they would.

I hope you can try and navigate in German and here is an online translation for German text

What ever you decide good luck.

I have seen 3 yes 3 of these Passats at the Salvage auction in the last month so there are some around for parts.
    Start searching.

I`d take it apart, but its a job for on the kitchen table with plenty of time and space.
