    No Cat, No Oxygen sensor.

After checking over everything I can now confirm my car does NOT have a catalytic converter or O2 sensor.

It was imported from Africa with a factory 2E bottom end.
It also has a 4 in to 2 exhaust manifold on it aswell (not typical of a RV head?).
Did South Africa have lower emissions standards?

Also where would the connector/plug be for the O2 sensors harness/plug?
Getting an average of 15 litres per 100K, is that typical of a car with no O2 sensor, or should I check over other components?

Any comment or ideas are welcome cause Im at a dead end atm.
Ill posts some pics up later.

    Thanks

EDIT: had a chat with the previous owner, and it came to Australia without a cat/O2 sensor.
South Africa did't have high emissions standards?
Either way, an O2 sensor improves/helps fuel economy wouldnt it? Somthing anybody in any country would want....

How does it have a 2E bottom end from the factory?

    Is it Kjet or Digi?

Without a O2 sensor on a Digi your fuel economy would be terrible, dunno about Kjet.

VW built plenty of cars that don't have cats or lambda probes. Not having one fitted, assuming it shouldn't have one, wouldn't make the consumption double.

Is it digifant/electronic or K-jet mechanical?

Of course, stupid me for not saying
    Its a Digi 2.

I beleive these papers are rather original

I was also told by the previous owner that it had come from the factory with a 2E bottom end...And of course its got a piece of metal attached to the block stamped "2E****"

And as I said, here are some pics (if you dont know what a catless MK2 looks like)

Off the 4 into 2 manifold into the dual downpipes

Downpipes bending to go towards the direction a cat would be in...

    Downpipes eventually merging

    And BAM no Cat.

Now this little 2 wire plug wouldn;t be where the O2 sensor harness usually plugs into would it?

Not as helpful as I had hoped. I couldn't find it on ETKA. google threw up a couple though which makes me think the ECU is from a 2 litre Passat. I can't tell which year though. I know that the very early MK3 GTIs that had this engine, didn't have cats fitted in the UK.

So it is entirely possible that there is no cat/lambda needed. Could be any number of reasons yours is using lots of juice. Coolant temp springs to mind.

    Thanks!
Have a funny feeling this car is a bit of a mix of VW parts.
(Blue) Coolant temp sender is the next thing to be replaced.
Going to save up and get the injectors removed and cleaned/rebulit too, maybe replaced if needed.

If it does have a O2 sensor harness to the ECU, then I may get an exhaust shop to weld a bung into my exhaust for a Oxygen sensor to mount into
    One day

Post a picture of the engine bay for me. Lets see what else isn't from the original car. It is easy to put a 2 litre bottom end in but has it got a full 2litre engine fitted??

    Gavin

PS I think having the injectors rebuilt isn't worth the dollars.
