Rob
Hi guys, I bought a MK2 GTI last week; its my first MK2, so please be gentle. Im going to maintain it as is, zero mods other than the radio, my desire is to maintain a stock care (yes, I know, boring....)
Its a late 1990 build, late 91 on the road in Australia, its an Australian imported 8v. Big bumpers, power steering, 5pd manual, Was originally delivered to a lady in Perth (I have her name...), the 2nd owner was in Adelaide and I am the 3rd owner. 159,000km with service books (and delivery documents etc.) last service 10,000km ago, it was registered and a daily driver until a week ago (reg ran out, it was SA reg). I would describe its condition as fair to good. Ive bought it as a project car, not daily transport.
Its white, the body is ok, a couple of areas have been resprayed but the body seems good, I can only see one area that has been damaged/repaired Front passenger Qtr). Essentially no rust (1 minor surface spot under mirror), Its totally stock, no mods other than the radio. Condition is ok, its tired in a few areas, the window rubbers are average, a few bits of trim tatty but in general its pretty good for almost 20 years old, seats totally intact, one small hole thats it. I'll post some pictures shortly, im going to polish the bodywork over the weekend. Im getting a roadworthy check done next Tuesday to see what I have to do to get it on the road and registered.
Issues:
- Door rubbers (windows) are old and brittle
- Front lower indicator lenses (1 screw type) have the locating tabs snapped off
- Windscreen Washer water doesnt pump
- Indicator stalk tends to stick, its a little dodgy
- Black wheel arch trim is average, 2 are scraped a little
- Dashboard cracked (but can live with it for now until I find a replacement)
- Jack point cover missing on passenger side skirt (front)
- Forgot to add the "electric" door mirrors are shot and dont work, thank god the windows are wind up.....
At a minimum I need to fix the indicators/washer water pump for the roadworthy (obviously) plus what ever else fails. Tyres are a year old, doesnt appear to have any leaks and the motor/box feel ok as do the brakes, might need some bushes replaced, etc (but we will see.........)
As soon as I get it on the road im going to start getting some stuff done. Roadworthy obviously the number 1 priority.
I will have plenty of questions but promise to search as much as possible before asking.
Cheers
Dave

----[ Finished the search for a mk2 GTI]----
1990 Golf Mk2 GTI
276* cam
2 1/4 in straight through exhaust
H&R springs on KYB shocks
Here she is; all I have done is wash it, quick polish and a good interior clean. I have Auto "glymed" the plastic/rubber trim and repainted the rear bar with K&H bumper paint, it was smothered in bloody shoe polish Arghhhh!!
Got the roadworthy check today, has the following issues:
- Rear lower front arm bushes (both sides)
- Left tie rod end boot N/R
- Front lower control inner arm bushes N/R (both sides)
- Centre muffler has a hole in it, needs replacing
- Centre muffler hanger is broken
- Washer water doesn’t pump (I think the small electric pump unit is R/S)
A couple of bulbs need replacing and the bloody electric mirrors that are RS will fail the roadworthy; if you have elec mirrors they must work, so the easy fix is to remove the knob and put a blanking plate over for now and make them "manual" control mirrors. Im pretty happy with the roadworthy, its almost 20 years old so these issues are to be expected.
Hopefully the pictures work; let me know what you think (btw I removed the rear badge when cleaning it, it was RS, I have a new one coming)
Cheers
Dave

Nice mate!
Just cut out the centre muffler and replace it with a straight piece of pipe.
Will sound good and pass road worthy whilst keeping the dollars down.
Looks like it could be a twin to my car if I put the flares back on, but yours looks heaps better.
