    New Mk2

What up, i just recently bought a 2dr 8V mk2 GTi, its on gumtree still i think.. haha

was just wondering about some minor engine mods, cause i don't know much about the engine and all..

i heard stuff about chipping it.. and pods and whatnot but i don't know how much a pod would benefit it.. seems like it'd be sucking in hotter air.. haha

im gonna dump a 20V T into it later on down the track but for this year i was thinking about fooling around with this engine just to get some more DIY experience i guess

let us know what you think of the car, and who else has one!!! was wondering how many in AUS let alone VIC

Congratulation ! I can guess which one you bought
Start saving coin if you want 20VT, 20VT is cool, but I still prefer to stay with original 8V or 16V character of the Mk2.

yours is the white UK spec car??
If it is, it's on k-jet so can't be simply chipped. Unlike the aus spec ones on Digifant injection.
The ecu on k-jet cars only looks after the ignition, not the injection.. That's the metering heads job.
But not to worry, I got k-jet and it's awesome!!! (there's plenty of threads around about it)
Also fitting a pod, wont be all that easy.. the metering head and filter is in one unit. thus putting a pod on, what do you do with the metering head.
I've just got a k&n panel filter and it works a treat

When did the car have it last thorough service???
Maybe just needs a really good tune up.

You'll be surprised how much you can actually get out of an old 4 banger.. Rebuild, port polish head, pistons, conrods, extractors etc and will probably still end up cheaper than dropping a 20v in.

thanks red, yeh I've already got a 20V so figured i may as well chuck it in!

yep the white 8V yeh i don't want a pod! just want to make it a bit faster, maybe some cheap extractors, or are webbers possible? whatever they are!!

the car has been incredibly looked after, had a thorough service every year, however yet to have one this year. its not slow or anything! i recon its pretty quick to be honest, but yeh, i want it louder and bait faster i guess

yeh i know but this engine is just sitting around cause dad was gonna use it but didn't so i may as well.

It's would actually be cheaper to do a 20VT swap, than to full rebuild an 8V. And you'll get twice as much HP. (not even joking)
and besides, if you've already got access to one, you'll negate one of the biggest costs (buying a 20VT)

As for the current engine. There's a fair bit you can do without pulling the engine to pieces. Full exhaust, cam up, reco'd injectors, reco'd ingnition gear will all elp give the old girl a new lease on life. this is providing that the engine is in good servicable condition to start off with.

If I'm not mistaken, this car was sitting for a fair while before you bought it? It probably needs a bit of TLC, but nothing that's out of the relm of a competent DIYer! Kjet can be very confusing, so you best get a heard start and start learning about as much of it as possible.

Yeh let us know how you go with the extractors and whatnot lowtdi.

haha yeh thats true man, it'd suck to have to buy a 20V, but id probably still do it

oh the engine runs sweet! apart from second gear being a head ****, (if i don't put it in slow it sounds like it hits or whatever.. that noise u get when u don't put the clutch in properly or only put it in gear slightly.. the big GRRR noise i call it.) but otherwise i love it! its smooth and has some go! ill take a photo of the bottom of the exhaust so u can see what the guys done to it, he's had the middle of the pipe done i think..

yeh i gotta get on this "k-jet" ****! haha as if I'm not confused enough with engines as it is!

Might be able to minimize the "GRRR" noise with a gearbox oil change and perhaps some new linkage's/bushes.
Does it grind particularly when cold or just all the time? (pretty common on MK2's)

geez, if you've already got a 20v.. score!!!
there are a few guys on here that have done it, wade (golfballs) in WA and numerous others.

also join Club GTI in the UK.. there's TONS of info on 8v, 16v, 20v, conversions etc.
they'll know the best things to upgrade, reco.

changing injectors, ignition leads, coil etc. makes a world on difference!!
