    Question New Engine Mounts

    So im going to be in the UK in a few weeks and will be picking up some bits and pieces and high on the list is some new engine mounts. Taking into consideration that the likely swap will be an ABF, what type would you recommend? I dont want the thing too sloppy but I also dont want it to be over the top.

    I was thinking of getting some G60 mounts from GSF?

    Also, another question. GSF has 2 G60 versions, one called ENGINE MOUNTING-FRONT and the other ENGINE MOUNTING-FRONT(BQ), BQ standing for Best Quality, the price is about double for the BQ version, can anyone explain the actual difference to me? (apart from the fact its better quality :p)

    I am sure the rear mount and front mounts are hydraulic on the G60, but everyone usually get the rear and front mounts changed to a heavy duty rubber compound. I have read in vortex that most would say a good setup would be to use the standard GTI mount with a heavy duty rubber compound insert for the rear and possibly solid front mounts.

    I would just get the Vibratech mounts all 3 if you can.

    I looked at the Vibratech mounts, although I havent seen(felt) them in action I got the sense they were a little hardcore, not to mention expensive.

    If they are too much it sounds new stock GTI mounts plus some poly inserts might be the go?

    I`d use stock VR6 Mounts for the rear and a G60 or Vibratech for the front.

    Rear VR6 mounts in plentiful supply over here? Only getting one Vibratech would certainly help costwise

    yeah but the vr6 mounts are still hyd , see if you can get a mk3 diesel gearbox mount. is a solid rubber job and supposed to be great and cheap, around $15-20 in the US, prob the same in the uk

    Is there a consensus (proven or not) that the front should be more solid than the rear?

    Due to the nice exchange rate....there is the Bahn Brenner solid fronts option?

    When you set off, which is the time the front mount is under most pressure. The engine is trying to rotate out of the engine bay backwards. Therefore the motion you want to stop is lift. The Bahn Brenner solid mount is supposed to be good for that.

    The other thing you can do, which I used to do myself is, strip apart a std mount and fill it up with 5 or 6 mm rod. This removes most of the flex in it and stiffens things up without making it nasty.

    I haven't any pictures but you can cut through the 4 tabs that hold the mount together with a hacksaw. Inside you have a big lump of rubber which is maybe 3 inches tall and 2 in diameter. It has lots of holes cast in it. I used to use a load of old bolts with the heads cut off.

    The hard part really, is squishing it back together to weld it up.

    If this method needs an endorsement, Ian Birch told me how to do it.

    Cost, next to nothing if you have a mig welder.

    Tim is now a distributor for bfi mounts. With my abf i just bought new stock mounts as it was too expensive to buy the vf engineering ones and noone but mjm would sell me polyurethane ones (well the others were too expensive).
