    Nice! My old Mk2 project.
    I can give you some history if you like.
    It's an 88 Driver. Uk Import.
    Door cards are GTI (out of my 87 GTI).
    I bought it to use as a daily, but on the way home after purchase the oil pressure blew the oil filter in half. LOL
    After lots of stuffing around and not finding the problem a 16v went in....But it just sat around, as I wanted to spend money on the GTI .

    Repairing the door cards

    using wood work glue, paper macheing and clamps to straighten and patch up the holes and water damaged areas.

    this thing is cool, i bought a lot of my small bumper stuff from vw heritage like those stone guards you mentioned

    also currently trying to fix the dash aswell as doorcards. the dash is all warped so steaming it so its bendably then clamping it into shape

    at a bit of a loss :/ am currently engineless looking for a mk2 or mk3 16v but their hard to find..

    anyway been working on the dash among other things and just used epoxy to fill the cracks i am folling this guide VWVortex.com - DIY Dash Restore Mk1.....

    Pick up a cheap Mk3 GL. 2ltr 8v, 5 speed box and brakes exhaust etc. Maybe give Andrew Robinson a call about a donor!
