This may seem like a weird thread bump but it is related.

I bought Dan's car last weekend. Had a little bit of a drive last week but with the wet weather didn't get to give it a real drive.
With that in mind I decided to take the car out for a good drive today through the Kuringai national park. Pulled out of West Head road changed into 2nd gear, changed into 3rd gear going around a blind corner and the car came to a screeching stop, skid marks and all. Car seems to be stuck in two gears which means it couldn't be pushed off the road either.

I walked up the road to warn people to slow down and a few minutes later some water police came down the road. They decided to control traffic until the tow truck arrived (well they controlled it until their knockoff time and then got a normal cop to take over).

Guess I'll rip the trans out during the week and see where to go from there. Already called Matt of Camden GTI while I was waiting for the tow truck. Apparently he's got some diesel boxes coming in in a couple of weeks. Might just wait until one of those arrives instead of trying to fix mine.

Trying to remember what we did to resolve the issue with this box last time.

It wasnt a full rebuild, I think just a couple of bits were changed. i`ll ask the guy who builds the boxes for me.

Diesel reatios are best for a pokey petrol engine and they are tough as the proverbial.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean it was related in that it was something you did, I meant that it was related in that it involves the same car in the thread. Sorry if it looked like I was saying something different.

Anyway, once the transmission gets ripped down we'll have a better idea of what went wrong.
Just out of curiousity, there must be a way to change the car to cable shift instead of linkages. I've never had good things with linkage shifts.

Yeah go a new box mate im sure something has sharted in the box to lock up like that. when you strip one of them down you lock it in 2 gears to loosen gear 5. So something has let go
    Good luck with that

Would it be worth getting a diesel box for my 8v Matt?

Good upgrade for a pokey 8v engine IMO, makes the power happen earlier and you can wind out the gears longer.

Plus the Diesel boxes are strong as......

I have a few landing in early March if you feel the need.

diesel boxes will wind out to 150 - 160 in 3rd... i could barely get that in 5th with a stock gti 8v box.

if you're pushing it with a stock tired 8v 1800 motor, the inital acceleration will suffer, but you'll get killer fuel economy!

If that's the case I'm not sure if I'd want the diesel box. As it was the car didn't seem to really come on song until after 60km/h in 2nd gear. With a taller gear box I'd never get to use the powerband of the engine. Are there any shorter ratio gearboxes?

Think about where a diesel makes its power. Low down in the rev range.
Perfect for what you are saying, it will make the power come earlier.
However, the double win is that the petrol engine can rev higher, so you dont need to change up, you can just keep accellerating.

I have put diesel boxes on heaps of NA petrol engines and it wakes em up.
TDI box on a Turbo petrol engine is also phenomenal.

The Yanks know all about this, check on Vortex.
