    mk2 need some advice

Morning you lot as mentioned in the newbies corner i will be going after my first Mk2 this week or next and there are a few possibilities that i need some advice on.

The First is a mk2gti 8v that is for sale locally, only thing is its not regoed at the moment and has been sitting for around a year. its a four door in red and the fella bought it from the auctions with the hope of getting it back on the road, went round to look at it yesterday and the guy couldnt start it as it had no battery in place so i told him to get it going and id come back later in the week. the interior and exterior both looks good
except it has been in a noticable accident at some time in its life, looks to have been hit on the left side front guard which has in turn dented the bumper, guard and bonnet, so all these will have to be replaced and sprayed. i had a good look at the chassis though and the engine bay is all straight so should be purely cosmetic damage. either way i will get an RAC check on the vehicle before i purchase it just to make sure its not going to be an endless pit of money. Hes asking 3500 for it i think hes dreaming at that price, and should be able to get him to 2500 if all goes well, then say 1000 to fix it up with parts and spraying and 500 for anything extra and getting it on the road. could end up worth the risk. what do you guys think?

Alternative is to go for one thats already done regoed and needs no work, but obviously pay the extra in the process..

let me know your thoughts, cheers Dan

Don't want to be negative but the guy probably paid less than a grand for the damaged vehicle at auction so price should be very negotiable. Based on the fact it actually does run well I'd negotiate a good price over the phone or start looking elsewhere.

I payed about 2750 for a rego'd, running, decent nick GTI with about 180,000kms on the clock. Like Robin said, if he got it auction he wouldnt have payed much....dont offer more than $2k i reckon...but if you love it...thats different MkII's do come up fairly often though, so dont feel like you have to get that one.

Sounds like the bloke from Rockingham, he wont budge on price ...

the damage you have mentioned, did you put a tape measure over it to verify what you could see ? I think it would cost you abt $3000 to repair it specially if you dont have the skills to do it yourself.

    good luck bud

hey mate yeah the guy was from rockingham down off ennis ave there, he said he was negotiable and i think if you point out what it needs doing and what you can get for the same price he might come down a fair bit, but you never know. no i didnt take a tape to it, from what i could see it was just struck on the front corner buckling the left side quarter panel bonnet and breaking the bumper, but it could be more than that. best thing i can do at this stage is see how it drives and let to RAC guy have a look at it and get the verdict then go from there. if it is just panels and the bumper ive priced them to around 600 from a local vw wreckers and i can install them and paint them if need be. theres also another white four door in the paper i was sent some pictures of that and it doesnt look all too bad, i dont suppose youve checked this one out?

    cheers, Dan
