Mk2 GTI import
Been looking for a Mk2 Golf for a little while now and found this one on carsales.com.au - 1988 Volkswagen Golf MK2 GTi - Just wondered if anyone knew anything about the histroy of the car, or any help with thoughts/things to look for? New to VW.
thanks

This looks like the one that was on ebay a few months ago for $6000. If it is then you need to find out if the guy selling it now bought it off ebay and is now trying to get rid of it. Why is he selling?
Because it's wrapped there could be a rust problem. That's your main worry. Anything mechanical can be replaced or upgraded fairly easily and cheaply (compared to a modern car). Check under the carpets, around the windscreen and under the flares - places you don't normally see.
The price he wants is pretty good for a 2 door which is much rarer than the 4 door in Oz. Be prepared to spend time fixing the car though, even when you've fixed everything. There's always something that needs to be done so if you aren't handy with a spanner you better have mates who are otherwise you'll soon be calling your mechanic by his first name. It is a 26 year old car after all.
Not that the MK2's are always breaking down - far from it - but they do need more loving than a modern car. The payback is a fantastic little car that puts a smile on your face every time you take it for a run through the winding bits.
Cheers

+1 to what Paul said.
He captured my experience perfectly. Mine was bought with issues but it got there in the end

Can't agree more- well worth the effort if the car needs a little work.
2 doors are rare as hens teeth.

yea, Paul is on the money.
Rust is the biggest issue these days, and often the hardest thing to fix. Mechanically, it' can all be upgraded or replaced.
If you're not handy on the spanners, I wouldn't bother with it, unless you've got deep pockets.
Good Luck!
