Thread: MK2 GTI 16v Upgrades

only thing i know you can do is change the chip to raise the rev limiter...but on a standard motor its not worth doing.

The rev limiter is pretty high already.

The standard K-jet cannot be chipped. The KE-jetronic which is fitted to the 9A motor and some 1800 16V's that are catalysed can be chipped.

You can fit a piggy back computer to them though. I had a 16V Corrado years ago that I fitted Racelogic VSAM to. You could program it with a laptop to adjust the timing and fuelling.

The best thing to do is a good run on a rolling road to make sure it's not running weak at the top end and sort that out if it is.

considering its age a good service inc new leads, injectors and fuel pump, a air/fuel tune and a airfilter can go a loooong way, plus a good fang around the streets for 10min can really flush out any crap that may have clogged your motor, cams are entry level performance upgrade, ranging from $200-$1,000+ for a set of cams, but once you go past $500 ones, then it would be wise to upgrade the topend internals to accomidate for the large degree cams, such as stronger valve springs, ohh and a nice flowing muffler can gain a couple hp, with k-jet performance, upgraded fuel distributor and bigger airbox works well, the 50mm intake would be a bonus! gives great topend torque compared to the standard 1.8 42mm one!

sorry if ive jumbled up the explanation but you get the idea (i hope)

    Thanks for all the tips!

Its due for a service, so I'll get that done first and see what the mechanic has to same about its form.

Not sure what the deal is with the computer, maybe the mechanic i spoke to was telling me porky pies.

Thanks Velly and Pedro, ill definately take you up on the offers following the service.

I bought the car in Brisbane 6 months ago and drove it back down to Melbourne. Ill post some pictures soon
