    mk2 golf stalling issue?

    Hi Guys

    I just bought a mk2 golf GTI 2 door, 2 weeks ago. it is 1987 1.8, 2 door. GTI

The body is a bit rusty, but can do with a full restore and respray, just sussing out where i can get a full set of rubber seals, so that i can restore it properly and do away with the rust? any clues where i can get these from please?

The passenger door seems to be folded in, not quite sure why and the fender is dented. Pictures below. Maybe a panelbeater can fix this or try get a second door, if i can find one.

the engine for me seems strong and is what i expect of a GTI and has some what power, which is a nice feeling in my toes, he he he, but needs some attention and love.

the wiring on the car is very suspect,
    1) the lights only works with brights on, suppose conversion to 2 headlights only
    2) the is wires hanging loose every where in engine bay
    3) the battery red terminal has about 5 red wires running from it, scary ..
    4) electric windows not working properly.

but what can i say, what do you expect of and 1987 car and finally some pics.

(first time using photobucket, sorry if it doesnt work)

Recently i have had some stalling issues:

It was only until yestersday, when i started to get stalling problems. In the afternoon the car wouldnt start, there is a swing but seemed no fuel was going through.

I then push started it and it started, but I had to keep the revs above 1000 and drove it slowly home.
When I got home the car switched off itself and little black smoke cam out of the exhaust. I left it overnight and said I would have a look at it in the morning.

This morning, I tried starting it and it started first go, but was idling a little below 1000 rpm, with a slight jerk in the idle.

After a few revs, it was ok. Took the kids to school and got to park it and then tried starting it again it wouldn’t, I then push started it again and it started, not sure the cause of this.

I have recently bought the car and put in vortex premium 98 petrol, the guy before used unleaded.
I admit, I gave the car a bit of a hammering the week-end on the freeway and damn it goes good, for GTI.

Do you guys know any issues that can cause this or hints to look at ?

i have a new fuel filter, but i am scared that it might be the catalytic converter, if it has one?

    cheers Zee

It's digifant that one mate. Idle stab valve will probably want a clean out to help with the tickover.

The lights have been messed with, you can see the non standard wiring in the battery photo. Could be a blown fuse somewhere or as duff relay.

When you say it won't start, is that because it doesn't crank or is it not firing?

Yeah tell me about the lights, not quite sure whats going on there, but the lights only works with high beam on, need to get a new wiring redone correctly.

Well it started yesterday morning and today, but its burning rich and also cuts out now and then, when i do come to a stop ? also noticed in the morning, that the idle has some jerk/cough in it.

    Buy that

    From here
    GermanAutoParts.com

Will basically diagnose every problem the car will ever have and methods to fix it.

Btw the jerking caused at idle is highly likely to be caused by a vacum leak.
Go buy a can of Aerostart (starting fluid) and spray around all joints and points on the manifold or vacum pipes, if the idle changes when the aerostart is sprayed in a particular area you just found a vacum leak
