I was just wondering whether there is a plate or something somewhere saying what country and factory the car was built in and perhaps the import number. I have had a look around the engine bay and have no idea where it is (if there is one)

You can submit your VIN to the Autostadt museum and for a fee they will post you your "birth certificate" with all the details on it.
My Bentley Manual decodes the VIN as follows:
7th and 8th number = model
Letter in the 10th space = model year (F = '85, G 86, H 87, J 88, K 89, L 90, M 91 and N 92)
Letter in the 11th space = country of manufacture (V for US, W for Germany, M for Mexico)
