Mk2 Golf GTI Fuel Filter Housing / Swirl Pot

My standard VW Golf GTi 1990 8V has a slight fuel leak from the fuel filter housing (swirl pot) located under the car in front of the fuel tank.
This part is obsolete and no longer available.

I managed to source a new, old stock in the US and had it shipped to Australia, only for Australia Post to lose it!!!!!


Anyone know of a wreckers or an alternative?


Apparently a Mk3 is an option but you need to replace the tank and do a bit of in house wiring.


Any other suggestions?

They're a bitch to find these days sadly, took me 3 months to track one down

A lot of the us sellers on ebay don't actually have them in stock either (they just think they do so they list them then when it comes time to drop ship them to you, they will either tell you that they're not in stock or pretend it gets lost)

You will find them on ebay.co.uk if you are happy to go down that route.

I spoke to brian at gti imports a while ago and he couldnt track one down but was looking into having a local make something up as a drop in replacement? Super helpful guy

I managed to pick one up out of the blue from Camden GTI as they had a car come in as a wreck with a good one

Has anyone given you the part numbers etc? Makes the search easier online

Have a Golf 2 GTI for wrecking in the yard. Has the fuel swirl pot and some other parts.
Might be a faster option than waiting for Brian.

How did you go with this? Mine is now leaking fuel too. I haven't gone underneath to see if it's the housing or the fuel pump o-ring.
I have bought an o-ring so hopefully the plastic housing isn't cracked otherwise I'll have the same issues as you trying to find one.

If you get stuck I've got one that I patched up 2 years ago. The housing was cracked so I used some fuel resistant glue to fix it and a jubilee clip to keep it tight.

It was working fine with no leaks up until I crashed the MK2.

You can also bypass the MK2 setup and fit an aftermarket electric pump and filter. It's a little bit more complicated to setup and install but easier to replace parts if you have to.

On hold. I managed to locate NOS, but that was lost in the post. Waited as apparently "Returned to sender" but it hasn't arrived.

Another suggestion was to swap a Mk3 tank in, pump, filter and then modify the wiring loom.

Knock sensor gone, so on hold until after Christmas.

Also the radiator doesn't stay or come on after I've turned off the engine after a long hard drive on a hot day. I thought that it was supposed to?

I have an unknown wire in the engine bat, OE but electrical taped to the main wiring loom. Not sure what it's for but have a suspicion it's for a radiator after run temp switch????

Don't talk to me about radiator fans. When I replaced the gearbox I plugged all the wires back where they should go and the fan kept running for 10 minutes after the ignition was turned off. If I turned the ignition on it would stop but come on for another 10 minutes when turned off.

I ended up unplugging a few connectors and leaving them unplugged and it works fine, only runs for a minute when turned off. Go figure.
