Wriggle all the electrical connections under the bonnet. It could be something as simple as a loose connection.

Just encountered yet another problem with my Mk2 Golf 8v. The problem has occurred 2 times previously and then happened again today on the way home from school but I have trouble explaining what exactly is happening. I'll be driving fine, then all of a sudden the engine will begin to hesitate strongly and it seems to sound louder from the exhaust (that could just be in my head). Then I slow down for a stop sign and let the revs drop, the engine will stall. It then started again and I was able to limp home without letting the revs drop. Then once the engine is stopped and left for a while it will start up no worries and run fine again. Like i said this is only the third time its happened since I have owned the car so its not a huge inconvenience or anything but I just want to make sure its not anything majorly bad. Does anyone know why this could be because I'm stumped!
Thanks

Split hoses after the air flow meter. Incorrectly set base idle setting. The screw in the throttle body should be able to hold the idle on it's own, without the ISV working.
Google how to check that.
