Antinora, read my thread "A/C Pain thread" in the MK3 section. It will give you some idea of how painful VW A/C fixes can be... But so worth it on days like today (hot as $%^#!!!)
Has some important reading too regarding upkeep of ur system......

    Cheers!

    Could be belt slipping.
The light indicates alternator not charging.

different pullies and compressors, that cant be interchanged as the belts dont line up. System is different on 1990 and 1992 car.

It could just have been messed with, but I am basing this on more than one car.

This is almost certainly the compressor belt slipping as syncro says. It happens on a wet road when even small amounts of spray get thrown up onto the belt. You need to fit a gravel tray under the pulley to shield the belt. So far as I know VW didn't make one. I have seen a plastic one that was made in Italy (maybe the Italian cars had aircon too). Otherwise you need to make something up yourself or get one made. A panel shop or sheet metal shop is probably the way to get one made.
Its a real bug on these cars because the demister starts the compressor to force the air through the pollen filter and since you mostly need the demister when you're on a wet road ...

The demister/compressor story makes me think the aircon cars might have a unique wiring loom too.

Yes, VW do make one. GTI imports were selling them.
