Only 123k? Even the seats wouldn't be worn in.

Check the bodywork for rust, especially under the carpets and around the window rubbers. Mechanically, parts are interchangeable with the MK3 and there are a lot of MK3's around but body parts are very rare unless you get them from overseas ($$$). Rust can be repaired but factor in costs if you make a bid for the car.

Take it for a drive. If it feels nice to drive without making scary noises or leaking any fluids then start talking serious with the owner. If it does make funny noises then work out what's causing them and what's needed to fix it. Parts are cheap so even a dud engine or gearbox can be replaced for under $400 if you are willing/able to do it yourself or have mates that are easily bribed with a 6 pack.

DON'T go into the sale loving the car before you've bought it. You will be blinded to any faults that a normal person would pick straight away. If necessary get someone to go with you.

The car is 25 years old. Expect faults but everything can be fixed. It just depends on if you want someone else to fix it (expensive) or you are willing to do it yourself (rewarding when you get it right).

    Cheers

    Paul
