I used to be able to get into first fine when the bushings were shagged, but now because of either the short shift or the new bushes or both, it's hard to find first.

1st is often notchy. this might be a function of your shifterbox. the little rubber ball in there might be shagged. well it most probably is. the engine bay linkages will only help so much

have u checked that the reverse lockout isnt fouling as u try to get it into first? Might just need to be adjusted slightly in the engine bay. Its hard to do it on your own though.
Might just be the bushes being new, and being a bit tight. they're starting to loosen up some more, so I'll give it a week till I start adjusting things.
I've still got to replace the bit that's under the shifter yet.
Nah I never had problems. Maybe ur shifter is out of alignment. Loosen that clamp on the end of the long rod thenget the c shaped template that lines everthing up and retighten. It worked in my other car and saved me from changing the ball underthe shifter.Originally Posted by Jarred
Well some blokes know already, but I've been having problems recently with the mk 2 using lots and (LOTS) lots of coolant.
Took it down to Volkspower today to get it checked out, cyl 3 is filling with water! Most probably the headgasket, with any luck, the head will be fine, but I'll have to take it somewhere to get it checked out while it's off.
hopefully if it hasn't been overheating too much, the head/block wont be warped.. that said, 1.8 8v engines aren't exactly the rocking horse poo of VWs in Australia.
it most definitely sounds like the head gasket. sounds like jarred needs a vr6 long motor...
