Thread: Jarred's Mk 2 GTI & silly questions.

  1. #11

clubgti forum under the 8v section have a wicked tuning guide and problem solving....well worth a look.

sounds like the throttle cable needs replacing. gear bushes also.
hunting idle, check all vacum hoses, one of mine was off and hunted badly. also mine will hunt abit when cold.

if you want me to put up with mine one evening and we can have a nose about

Thanks guys this is all good.

Cheers Vel. I think you posted it before. I'll have to go have another look at it. Maybe I'll bribe Tim into helping me service it (properly!)

oh and sorry, no coils and slammage for this. It's going to be my daily, and well, I'd rather spend the cash on other things

hahah... no. maybe. oh what the hell. i'm going to do a VR6T, dump it on air ride with some 17" RS's.

I went for a brap round the hills today.

Brakes definately need upgrading. mk 3 GL set up looks most promising so far, as that way I can still run 14's, which is important when it comes time to buy some semi's. Should also be able to locate most of the parts cheap.

tyres are toyo's and hello! good stuff there. and recaro's! oh beautiful.

Shift linkages need attention. I'm thinking about getting a short shift whilst I'm at it, I've seen them on GAP,but wondering if anyone else has any experience with any other short shift kits etc?

Front shocks aren't performing great. I'm thinking Io might upgrade to koni adjustable inserts. Lift off oversteer isn't crazy, so I think the standard sway bars will do for now. Will have to check the bushes just to see if they're in good nick.

Exhaust is droney as buggery, will have to look at that when i pop a mk 3 2L downpipe on.

I had a bit of an issue with pinging at low RPM when the engine got warm (oil temp up to 110-115), hopefully tune up will sort this out. running 95 atm.

I also think that the engine mounts need replacing. there's a bit of rocking when you get off the gas & between gear changes. Clutch is also slipping a little bit under hard accel in 2nd gear, but not noticable whenst brapping in the hills.

i had a short shift on my mk2 back in the uk, its fine be when the bushes wear they are a pain!!! i would look at putting a mk3 weight rod and new bushes and leave it at that (but its up to you really)

my old engine ran 95 degs, not sure what the 2.0 runs at as the sensor is buggered but water temp seems fine.

my pings sometimes but i know it does need a dam good tune, need someone with a timing gun and co2 reader to set it up as per tuning guide on clubgti.

i have heard nothing but good things about putting on the mk3 downpipe. i really need to do this next month....keep you eyes out for a mk3 in the scrapy...i need some bits off one too

    still, glad your having fun

Got a weighted rod here Jarrad, yours for the cost of postage if you cannot find one local. Or I can send it back with the boys after the DOVW.

    Gavin

EDIT Make the shift quicker your self. Take the bracket off the gearbox, the one with the ball on the bottom. If you reduce the height of it, the shift will be quicker. You can do it in a vice with a big hammer. A blowtorch for some heat helps too.

you should check out the crustyness of the coolant lines to the alternator. i flushed my system for the first time in its life about a year ago. we got about a kilo of mud out...

new bushes and weighted shift are all you need for mk2 shifting pleasure. oh also that alignment tool

( 3104 ) + mk3 weighted rod + bushes = orsm. I've heard the USRT rose jointed kits are a bit of a pain to fit. but they apparently dont wear out... ?

yeah the mk3 GL set up is definitely the cheap option. i got it as soon as it trashed my golf into a kerb... oops.
