First side of the scroll that becomes visible as the case comes apart.

    The other side.

My assessment of what I found. The charger apart from a fair amount of oil inside is in pretty good shape. The apex seal hanging out was initially a concern for me. Until I took the seal out. Then you can see that the groove isn't completely shot away.

I have some ideas on fixing it up so it doesn't do it again but I am definitely going to recommend more frequent servicing from now on.

Next job is to get the service kit, with a wider belt and get busy........

Thanks for the info, got there quick for standard post, said it would be Wednesday.

Sounds positive. As long as it is still going to go then regular service is no problem, I'll just have to get my head around and should be good.

So if I get the norm pulley, I won't need the chip then right?

Those rad ideas look overall more practical oemg60 so I'll have to research it. Just want to keep it cool in the summer.

    so should be sorted soon.

Also looking at getting one of these:

Hopefully should be all sorted soon so i can move onto other things such as gearbox, clutch, paintwork, wheels refurb and other nonesense.

I fitted all the rebuild kit today, took a good few hours. The bearing in the outlet side is in a blind hole and doesn't usually come as part of a rebuild kit. As it was there though, I thought I'd put it in.

Took me a bit of fettling to get it out. The rest was all straight forward. Turns smoothly and no knocking. I also primed it with oil, wouldn't be good to turn it with dry bearings.

I replaced the tatty old rubber bushes in the tensioner with some poly ones, they'll last for ages.

I'll get it back to Dan this week, so hopefully it will be back on the street really soon.

    Gavin

I don't think you mentioned it (perhaps I didn't read thoroughly enough)
But do you plan on flushing and chaning the coolant over to G12?

    Enjoy

well it has taken me about an hour Dan but I have read your thread from start to finish. I am looking at bringing in a mk1 GTI as there is nothing forsale here. Few questions.

    Would you do it again?

What was the total cost of bringing the car in ex the cost of buying the car? So shipping, insurance, reg and engineers cet.

What did you need to do in the end for the engineers cet? did you need to put side bars in? 3rd rear light? etc

    Many thanks

only just stumbled on this thread. i've got a 1981 Mk1 GTi that came over from the UK in 2004, got all the import paperwork the previous owner filled out if you want to have a nosey over it some time. might be of use, might not, but the offer's there.
There is no Golf in my life. This is unacceptable...

Would definitely do it again but would need to be in the money and to get something really rare to be worth it.

Haven't gone over all the details but was just under 6k for all the shipping and tax, that's the boner

Engineering took ages due to too loud and too low, running rich too so took a bit of magic to get it right. In Canada at the moment but can't wait to get back and hammer it

Saw loads of mk2 golfs and jettas over here, they love em

If you need any help don't hesitate to ask. Be glad too

We did a dodgy on the bars, so skipped that. Don't need a 3rd brake light but got one from the u.s as. Don't want a rear bender
