Im just having a think before i go through with the sale. The car is registered as a 16v but is an 8v g60, will this be looked at unkindly by the weigh-bridge and RTA and i could be up for fines.

Also is there someone in sydney/nsw that can service a g60. I've read that they are a reliable engine, but the supercharger needs regular servicing.

Also im a p plater till around november - december so is there a way to reduce the noise or such too not get stopped by police, or am i best not to drive it for the duration.

Also anyone had any experience insuring import such as this, is he bill greater?

Just some concerns that i want to make certain off before i buy it, as i dont want to get it hear and be stuffed for rego, insurance and then lose my license for driving it.

These are the clinchers which will make or break it. Will try have someone inspect it before shipment in the event that there is something wrong.

I'm not sure on your first question there, i do know of other cars being imported with engine conversions and nothing being said, but surely to avoid any hassle just get him to register it as an 8V G60, or at least when you apply for import approval get the G60 engine number off him to put on the form and say its a Supercharged 8V. I reckon Steve White will know the answer to that one.

Mark Hammond in Brookvale knows G60's, and theres also Gavin (H100VW on here) who has rebuilt a few Superchargers in the UK. The charger ideally needs a rebuild every 50K miles with a standard pulley, or around 35K miles with a 68mm pulley.

You could bypass the charger, maybe even take it off and get it rebuilt so its all nice and fresh for when you're licensed to use it.

My Corrado was insured with Shannons, cost about $1100 fully comp, green slip is no different in price. A 3dr Golf will probably be cheaper as at least VW sold the 5dr version here.

ok so here is the response to the question on rust and the supercharger:

    Hi Mate

Sounds good, let me know times/dates as you get it sorted.
With regard to salt on roads, can be a problem but in this case the car & chasis is in very good condtomorroition, prior to paint there was minimal rust to take care of (pretty much perfect base project car)
The supercharger on the car has been looked after and serviced recently - had it looked over myself, internals seem to be in good worked order, the charger has not been modifed or ported (standard is good http://www.edition38.com/forums/publ...ault/smile.gif )
    Engine blows no smoke either.

Also the engine number shouldn't be a problem - i will make note on the reciept the G60 engine number -
just to let you know i brought a vw camper over from South Africa and it didn't have the original engine but this caused no problem at all on inspection.

I will forward an e-mail in the morning with all necessary details required.

Cheers Dan - give me a call if you need to what ever time suits.

So is the go ahead, ill be purchasing in the next few days and then go from there.

Also my email to customs did not state that I needed a passport and that I should just have a VIA and be aware of the customs fees.

"The duty rate for importing cars is 5% of the Customs value. You will also have to pay Goods and Services Taxes (G.S.T) of 10% on

    The Customs value +

    The duty +

    The transport cost +

    The Insurance (if applicable)"

Im thinking this would be the only way to get around it, sort of:

If the seller does not have a V5 registration document or V5C registration certificate, you should register the vehicle in your name by using form V62 'application for a registration certificate'. You can get one by download from the vehicle forms link below or from any Post Office® branch or a DVLA local office. DVLA will then send you a new registration certificate in your name.

This form seems to be what you fill out for it:

If there is any other way, let me know.

I used to work for DVLA and I think there is a form you fill in if the car is for export.
He should ring them up and ask I reckon.

It's the last page at the bottom.

You don't need the V5 (it helps) If you get a receipt from the guy saying he sold it to you for $xxx.xx, then you can use that, but i think you also need a stat dec. i can't remember. But yeah, It's not cheap to import a car..

My bill so far, including shipping, insurance customs, quarantine (2x) is about $3.5-4k.
