I've got one quote returned so far (out of four)

    Hi Daniel,

Thank you for requesting a logistics quote from Taurus Logistics Ltd.

Your quote comes to a total of $2,926.52 AUD

But That was for a medium car (2000kg) so next time should be lower. They will also deal with custom and let me know all the steps of the process.

They look like a good company, ill see how i go with the other bits first though.

Good stuff Dan, awesome news, the Mk2 you've found is perfect, and for 2500 its a bargain mate, especially with the wxchange rate at the moment, theres never been a better time.

    To transfer money over to the UK i'd do a bank transfer, you'll need as much info as you can get about his account;

His IBAN number (International Bank Account Number)
His BIC code (like a sort code)
His full name (as appears on his bank account)
The banks address where his account is held (this is quite important as it verefies his BIC code)

As its a fair amount of cash being transfered i'd go into your bank with all the details and get them to do it for you. I've done it 40+ times and have never had an issue, the cash takes about 4 working days to clear and it will cost you around $30 to do it.

I'm glad you had a read through the Karman site, its full of good info and links like you say. Steve White deals with them, hes the man who owns www.cargoonline.com.au so he does all the paperwork and organises blue slip/engineers/customs/valueation etc if you don't want to sort it all out yourself. Have a look at his site i think he may even be able to organise RoRo too. Hes a top bloke and into VWs himself, he'll go out of his way to help you when you tell him your importing a Mk2 GTI!!

I don't know of any RoRo companys to recommend to you, but i can certainly recommend Karman, they are an excellent comany to deal with, had my Corrado sorted without fuss or damage. Maybe you should get a quote off them to compare against RoRo, you'll have your car here in 4 weeks that way too!!

    Hope this helps!

    Matt

ok, ive emailed a quote to cargoonline and karman shipping an dwill see how it all goes, ill ring them if need be. On the application form for VIA it states that you can nominate a company to interact on my behalf, is that where cargolines details would be placed and there for they will deal with customs?

    Hope all goes well.

Also do i need a quote for shipping before i get a VIA or after

Do i need it in my name to buy it like in australia with the rta, or can someone buy it on my behalf.

So after that all i need is a receipt and do the VIA, and contact customs

I've sent away for a view quotes on shipping so ill see how i go
You'll either have to get a receipt of purchase in your name (stat dec type of thing) or get the V5 (rego papers) changed to your name. BUT, as soon as the cash has changed hands, take your time. Don't rush!!!

When the V5 is changed you'll need to get to get a copy of all the pages of your passport, a copy of the bill of sale, and a copy of the import doc from Dotars.

Quarantine, depends on which sap you get! Mine went through 2 times at a cost of $385 each time. Some have had no issues and didn't need to be cleaned. Just make sure before you transfer the cash that it's not rotten underneath. You will regret it if it is! Rust is a huuuge factor in the UK, so make sure there's no bodgey repairs.

But the biggest thing is to try to get the receipt as low as possible. This will help regarding customs etc.

If im importing under the pre 1988 rule, do i need a passport or is that a requirement of customs/quarantine.

Here is what it states on Karman Shipping:

For the Clearance of a motor vehicle then present to the Motor Vehicle Section of the Australian Customs Service: passport, original bill of lading, shipping line delivery order, UK purchase receipt or invoice, UK registration document or certificate of export, travel documents showing date of departure to Australia, shipping details showing date of handover for shipment in the UK, vessel, sailing, arrival dates, freight and insurance costs, driving licence, personal import authorisation certificate from Department of Infrastructure Canberra, any supporting paperwork and documentation, a detailed list of any other goods or personal effects packed inside the vehicle and, if necessary, the Australian landed valuation report.
