tell me if im missing something here. (everything in aud)

    2500 for the car
    10% customs on that
    add 2000 shipping
calculate 10% gst on all that
    (2500 + 250 +2000) x 1.10 = $4750
so is it unrealistic to expect that i could have a very good 3dr 16v landed here for 5k aussie including the purchase price of the car?? cos i could stomache that...

Mischa, you might want to double check how they calculate import duty.

I have a funny feeling that the 10% duty is applied to the landed cost, i.e you have to include the value of shipping, gst etc and the duty is then applied. not sure, but have a funny feeling, check with an import/shipping agent

what you're thinking of is gst. according to this (pdf from aussie customs) http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/re...eprivownmv.pdf the customs value is only the value of the car + mods. gst is the thing that does you up the rear but 10% on 4k for gst isnt the biggest bank breaker although its still a bloody scam.

that 3dr in NZ looks pretty clean.. are the issues exactly the same with shipping something in from NZ? i mean, it seems that the only advantages shipping something in from the UK would have, is greater availability and cheaper purchase cost.. i would think that shipping from here to NZ would be a fraction from here to UK

....and with the NZ car you could get on a plane for about $450 return and check it out as apposed to buying one ex-uk sight unseen.
ie putting your trust with strangers...But hey this 16v is but one of what is available here, finding one in better (restored) or worse condition will not be an issue.

Keep an eye on the website that its listed on, others will pop up from time to time as will 3door 8v GTI's and digi 8v's, maybe drop a 16v to one in australia?
The UK market will offer way way more choice though.

yea good point. or we could get you to check it out for us eye bro?! hahah

Mishca. I think 5K is too little. I would budget on 7-8K but IMHO,I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being 10K once you include all the little details, inculding getting it reg'd here, and various things you'd have to do in the UK.

Maybe NZ is a viable option.

OR in Oz. Wait for the right car. IMO for about 5-6K you could by an 8V and put a 16V in it, and still have enough change for some mods.
