Thread: Importing a car + Qs for you Brits

  1. #11

my quote was 1400 Pounds to import my sportline (plus import taxes!!!)

it is 1000 pounds to ship the car.
it was 400 to have the car picked up and trailered to the port
then you have to pay import duties (about another 600 bucks)

i am looking at setting $3500/4000 a side minimum before i apply to import my car.

but i never knew about this pre 89 rule...hell i may look at bringing a 3 door mk2 gti 16v over too

yeah it ends up being effin expensive hey.

tell me if im missing something here. (everything in aud)

    2500 for the car
    10% customs on that
    add 2000 shipping
calculate 10% gst on all that
    (2500 + 250 +2000) x 1.10 = $4750
    2x Caddy, 1x Ducato

You shouldnt have to pay import duty on a personal import.

If you bring 2 in a container its cheaper to bring, but more effort at unloading time.

Ones to bring pre 89 would be 2 door Mk2 GTIs, Sciroccos and Caddys.

You cant bring car parts and cars in the same container as they are cleared in different ways and you will be paying big unloading charges.

If only. you should be able to bring a fair bit back in a container. they're pretty big, so two cars, + a buck load of stuff, but you'll have to pay tax on stuff you import I believe if it's over 1000 worth. (2 sets of wheels, and you're already over..)

I've seen a few pop up for sale in australia, and I honestly think for the price of importing + tax + fees + more tax + other shipping , basically about 4-5K worth, you could prbably get a one in Oz, that won't have rust in it cause of the salty roads! and the conversion rate isn't too favourable going from pound to AUD, so you'd loose a bit just buying the car. I think it could easily end up being nih on 10K before you even realise! which is quite a bit unfortunately.

What about the US? they have mk 2 3drs, that should be in decent nick, and the conversion rate is much more favourable than the pound. sure it's LHD, but with RHD steering compents, should be a straight swap, as the car was origonally built for both LHD and RHD. (I belive that's correct anyways)
Although yes, you won't actually be in the US to organise any of this.

and Steve, why would you bother importing a mk 1? We have quite a few. and I think (I'm basing this on the euro builds that I see on vortex and etc) pretty much all of them are rust buckets! needing pretty much full floors and sills in quite a ruber of cases, as well as wheel arches and window sills. The cost of a decent one would set you back more than what it's worth, in the hassle, and monitarily.

Anyways, that's just my opinion. happy to be proven wrong in any case!

If they're from the UK, count on a fair bit of rust, unless they've been repaired/restored. this would go for roccos and caddy's. which means importing parts would be a pain if you have to do it separate, as Matt said.

    Don't know a cost though

there is only really any value in bringing a car in if its something your heart desires. Cars never make financial sense.

What im after is something thats just a little bit unique even if it does set me back a few grand more than its worth.

! what condition was it in?

I was thinking a decent one (ie, no work needed, and pretty clean looking, complete and running of course) would set you back about 1000 quid?
