    Hub issue.

    Issues again,

this time its not engine related.

The bolt in the middle of my left hub (27mm, holds in the drive shaft and all that, you can see it if you take the hub cap off the wheel) keeps coming loose. It doesnt come off but it gets loose so that the hub moves around prity free.

I was just wondering if there was suposta be something there to hold it on. Maby a pin or lock bolt? If not then what is causing it to become loose?

Is it appropriate to double bolt it?

Mate get yourself a new nut , they should be replaced everytime you take it off. Its a lock nut. Left side will always try and loosen if it can this goes for wheels too if they are not tight. This is so because the left wheel goes anticlockwise and everything with it. Nut shouldnt come loose unless the lock is no longer a lock.

You should be able to get one from a VW dealer, they're not expensive. If it comes loose like that you run the risk of stuffing your wheel bearings.

Quite often the actual hub wears badly when the nut comes loose. It no longer becomes a press fit into the bearing itself and the nut comes loose with the movement.
Most VW workshops will have a box of new nuts put away.

Yeah I had to replace a hub because of that issue. The bearing surface was quite galled and a loose fit inthe bearing. I got one off a wreck but I've seen them new about the place too.

I've got a few of those nuts lying around (new ones) you can have if you want to come and pick up from Glen Waverley ... Mine are VR6 ones, anyone know if they're the same ??

I tightened it so much that i smashed my lip on the bonnet the last time lol.

100kg pushing down on a ~30cm wrench, i cant remember my physics but i think it was tight.
