how to spot a gti??

hey guys, did a quick search but nothing really came up, just wondering how to pick a gti from a non gti, iv just bought a 2 door mk2, its been chav'd a bit in england and am unsure what flavour it is exactly, it a 1.8 k-jet with a 5 speed box, tacho dash, little trip computer which gives me mpg and some other stuff, few mouldings are missing around the car so im a bit unsure if its a gti or not, im guessing it isnt but what are some other things to look for that can give it away?

ps- the obvious things like badges and stuff that specifically say "gti" are missing

MOT docs will say if it's a Gti, failing that, take the vin to VW and get them to check it. I take it it's an early MK2? What year?

Mines got the same spec as that, 5 speed Kjet etc. 1984 Gti

I would be real surprised if it wasn't a GTI. Nothing was supplied in the UK with a Kjet motor that wasn't a GTI.

Does it have sports seats and a sunroof, twin tailpipe exhaust(unless a real early one), rear discs?

**** **** **** ****in **** computer, 4th time typing this, keeping it short, it has
-sports seats
-it does indeed have a sunroof
-what appear to be factory power windows
-gti lower door trims (might not be genuine though)
-its big bumper with lower gti lip (once again, may not be genuine)
-has a lukey de-cat system in it so not sure there
-rear disk brakes
-doesnt have quad light grille but iv just realised theres extra plugs in the headlight wiring loom so that might explain that

Check the VIN. From memory the 4th digit in tells you the series (I.e. Golf 2 door) and the 7th/8th tells you details around the car spec. I think 17=GTI.

Go check vortex I've seen the details before. Matt (golf loon) probably knows these numbers from memory....

Early car should not have big bumpers, probably added later by someone with taste! Does it have quarterlight windows??
Metal sunroof should tilt and slide.
MFA dash and Kjet, I reckon its a GTI.

Golf sunroofs only slide on mk1s and 2s. Scirocco and Audi 80s had tilt n slides. MK3s had tilt and slides too.

yeh sunroof only slides, it doesnt have the quarter windows and the mirror mounted to the door if thats what your talking about, ill get some pics up tomorrow hopefully, be warned though, shes bloody rough around the edges so expect a full rebuild thread to keep you all entertained soon!

I didn't think the Kjet came out with the bigger doors. Must have swapped them somewhere along the line! Did you look for chassis damage?

what do you mean? its been a bit dinged up, passanger rear quarter is full of bog, passanger door is pretty gnarly up near the hinges.... body has definately seen better days, its a uk import and some one has spent quite a few pounds on it back in the day, its got false floors built up in the passanger foot well and big custom door pods and heaps of other chav crap haha
