Lots of wierd answers ,IF you are real lucky the ecu won't be toast but it sound like it,ALL earths have to be spot on and connected to clean contacts period.
VW addressed this problem in the very late mk2's and the first mk3's cause there were issues with the first dijifant cars, the ecu suffers because it needs a good earth,if not they cook and overfuel or work @ all.
MM no cold start injector in the dijifant ,its done by the ecu and gets a signal from the temp sensors.
No brown wires will ever have power as they are for earths or ground and are part of that system, bad earths can cause a number of other problems with the engine also.

Yep the carbs may seem like a solution ,but you will spend a lot less money sorting out the dijifant issues than going to carbs, yes they go well but are very costly to do right and will drive you nuts unless you know LOTS about them trust me.
Your fuel consumption will increase and you will find air cleaners very hard to set-up @ the inlet side of the motor and more don't go there unless you like tuning more than driving.
