Help guys! clogged cooling system causing overheating...

hi guys, well its firday avo and i have a track day at 8 on Monday morning.. This had to happen now

The prev owner had filled the system up with water and that has blocked the heater core, is there any way i can block off the heater core for now and stop the coolant going to it?

The return line coming back from the overflow bottle has split and started pissing everywhere.

    thanks

If you set it cold the water should not go through the heater core , or you could just run a heater hose from the out put side to the inlet side,

    thanks, its set to cold.

I just filled the system up (pulled the top rad hose off and filled to the top) again and ran the car to come up to temp, as it was coming up to temp the expansion tank started to bubble up air and eventually water, so i closed it. Then the bottom tube from the expansion tank got really hot (looking thru it it's somewhat blocked with rusty crap) and the hose that runs to the heater as well as the return got really hot too, but they felt empty?

could the thermo be blocked/stuck closed?
this is really doing my head in....

Also am i missing a plug here? this is on the right side of the block just under the head as you are looking at the engine.

    thanks

does your heater work mate? as in produce heat? if so your heater core and associated components are working. if you set the unit to cold and its still throwing hot air your tap could be stuck open, a possibility if the system has debris in it. you could always bypass the core but that will technically make the car unroadworthy. not sure if you care about that lol.

in regards to your missing plug everything looks good. i havent stuck my head well into the engine bay off a mk2 despite owning one. but to me that looks like the coolant flange and associated temp sensor for coolant leaving the engine and the kinked pipe possible a pcv breather if its to open atmosphere.

    is the car still overheating??

Hi mate, thanks for your reply. Yes I believe the core is clogged. I pulled the thermostat out on sun and gave everything a good clean before filling it up again. Hasn't overheated since. One of the terminals on the fan were slightly loose, so thankfully I think that was the main culprit.

I had a really good look around and can't seem to find a loose connector for that plug, so I guess it was like that to start. That PVC pipe looking thing is actually wire with a protecting sleeve on it.

I just got back from a track day and the car was flawless, showed them jap imports how we do it deutschland style.

Other then the shot suspention and the worrying smoke from the back due to fuel surge, the car behaved very well.

Very good to hear mate!! yeh i had a concern like that on a audi q7 just constantly blew hot air. turns out had carpet replaced at another dealer and they hadnt secured one of the connections properly on the a/c unit so as a default it just blew hot air. Weird lol.

Ahh you dont worry about the smoke from extra fuel, unless it starts washing the oil off the walls of the cylinder bores. How can more of something good be bad anyway :p

You have inspired me to track my gti too now!! god it would be fun

i think it was from a lack of fuel rather then too much of it..
It was after 2 heavy right hand turns, and the pump being on the right gets no fuel to the engine. I would also replace plugs and do a quick service before you head out oil, ect..

I think all the cornering has dislodged junk at the bottom of the tank and maybe clogged my pump as the car starts pinging under load.

Ow and your suspension better be on ok condition at least... Everyone keeps telling me it was an attraction to see me cornering in front of the stands on 3 wheels.
