Golf MK2 GTI 14" wheel upgrade to 16"

    Hey guys,
I was thinking of changing the wheels on my car and found a cheap set on Gumtree.

    I went from the stock 14's 185/60/14 to 16's 205/45/16.

I was really worried that they would not fit, feel terrible or like silly but I think I did alright

I had the tires fitted at Payless Tyres on Woodville Road Fairfield East and the service there was excellent! I even got new lock bots from there for $3.50 each! They also give you free drinks while you wait

    Old look 14's:

    New look 16's:

It looks like my car is the only thing not for sale in this pic lol

Wheels make it look heaps better but it needs more lows.

    Is it running standard suspension?

Yeah currently running stock all round. What's the ball park figure for suspension upgrades?

Cheap coilovers are a few hundred dollars but not worth it unless you like a harsh ride. Good coilovers are going to start around $600 and the sky is the limit.

I suggest, unless you're made of money, fitting aftermarket springs (lowered and stiffer) on your shocks.

Here's mine on Spax springs with Spax shocks on the back and standard shocks on the front.

For me this was the best combo, giving great handling but still soaking up the bumps without shaking my teeth. Until you've driven a modified MK2 you have no idea how well they can corner. Lots of fun teasing modern "performance" cars.

Have a read of my MK2 build thread to see what can be done to a MK2 without spending lots of money.

    Bought a MK2 GTI

    Cheers

    Paul
