hey mate- welcome to VWWatercooled!
the vw diesel engine in the mk1 or mk2 is easy to get parts for, no matter where you live. not to mention, they are so reliable anyway. the mk2 golf is a well built, great car, and the 1.6 turbo and N/a diesel engines are well engineered younger sisters of the original 1.5l n/a diesel engine common to the mk1 golf and passat.
many engine components are shared (gaskets, seals, fuel system, exhaust/intake/pistons/gearboxes/cvj's/bearings) , but the availability of major components is ok from local parts importers (for a premium price) or direct from overseas (cheaper) (cranks/rods).
consumables (oil/fuel/air filters) are all interchangeable, and readily available.
I have sourced many parts from http://www.volkswaparts.com/
if you are thinking about buying this car, i would say do it. it is, for australia technically a rare find, but mechanically very common to all other vw's and seats in many respects.
