So the latest is I now have a slam panel (courtesy of Camden GTi), just need to solve the bonnet problem.

Firstly, I'm assuming this is going to be a roadworthy issue? I have rego coming up in November, so I really need to figure something out. Please let me know if i'm wrong!

Preferably if I can get my hands on a second hand bonnet, that would be cheapest and easiest. This is proving difficult.
The option of getting it fixed by a panel beater probably wont be in my budget. Luckily, I've never needed to take something to a panel beater, but I suspect it wont be cheap as my bonnet has a mighty big crease! I think it may even be cheaper to buy a bloody carbon fibre/fibreglass bonnet from a performance parts company! haha!
Last option is I try and bang it out myself. I have a mate who has worked with bending sheet metal. It would be ugly, but it may be a temporary solution - accidentally creating a ratrod.

So if you were looking for a bonnet... where would you look next?

Start by getting a panel beater (or two) to look at the bonnet and give you a price to straighten it. It might be cheap but until you get a quote you don't know. If it's too expensive put it upside down on the ground and stand on it to straighten it out as much as you can so at least it closes properly and doesn't stick up. That should be enough to keep rego happy.

My bonnet had a huge bend in the middle where it tried to wrap itself over the roof. I straightened it as best I could using the method above so it doesn't look too bad and it's rego legal but I know I'm going to have to get a panel beater to fix it eventually.

They are as rare as hens teeth in Australia, real common in Japan and Europe but shipping costs would be astronomical.

Thanks sports racer. Looks like I will be giving it a go myself for now!

I imagine my attempt is going to be somewhat similar to this... https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=316356132437

Will post pics when I get there, probably in a month or so if I don't find a bonnet elsewhere.

Surely someone has a spare bonnet and stuff in sydney??!!
I've got one here thats in 'ok' condition, but the freight will still be awful.

Regarding your clutch, the 1.8 (mk2 and mk3), and 2.0 have the same size clutch but the 2.0 has a bigger spline diameter in the centre because of the shaft from the gearbox.

Seeing as though the mk2 GTI's were 1.8 i'd get the 1.8 clutch... BUUUUTT, if the gearbox is also from the mk3 2.0 you'll need the mk3 2.0 clutch.

So, it all depends if the original mk2 gearbox is still there...

Hey Golfballs - thanks for the info! I'll PM you about the bonnet.

As for the clutch, thanks for the info. I haven't worked on a clutch before so I may ask some stupid questions.
I believe the gearbox is from a Seat cordoba, which I know nothing about. Will do some digging to see if i can find what year model etc. I'm currently in class .

Is there any way I can identify what gearbox it is by getting eyes on it?

Ask Brian at GTI Imports for a bonnet.

Yeah the part number should be on the bottom of the bell housing.
