GOLF mk2 8v head only 4 bearing caps WTF

    Hi there all,

I have found something that I am not sure is normal. In the process of dismantling my 8v 1.8 GTI digifant motor for rebuild and just took tappet cover off and discover that there is only 4 bearing caps . There is nothing there between big end one and middle. Funnier still is that they are numbered 1..2..3.. ..5 4 is completely missing and has no studs or anything???.

I have heard of cost cutting but hecho en mehico is worrying me.

    Cheers and regards,
    Courtney.,

That's normal. IIRC the oil gallery for the tappets comes up there.

My 2L 8v (2e) is exactly the same.
I guess they don't rev/work hard enough to justify the 4th cap???

Thats good sort of, but was worried as my mk 1 1.6 had it for sure. Not mentioned in the hayes either. Anyway I am going down the rebuild path - transplant seem too much hassle. The engine is a good engine and as long as everything else is ok it is still a quick car, i can beat my vr6 in it (until 2nd gear winds out in the vr

    Thanks for the reply.

The mechanical lifter heads have it, hydros don't... I don't know why exactly but it's one of the identifying things between the 2
