the rv is an 8V. compared to german mk2s you'll be heaps dissapointed with the crap aussie spec ones.

yep aussie 8v's are slow...but still is a Mk2 so they handle sweetly.

Aussie ones have a small valve head crap exhaust mani meaning 95hp not 112hp. If you want power get a mk3 VR6/mk4 turbo

yeah you can easily do a head swap and extractors, the good thing about the aussie ones are the better rust proofing compared to the SA imports

    Rv 8v = sloooooow

95hp and all of them have 3 legs. If you want power for cheap do a UK head swap, cam and mk3 downpipe swap. Anything after mk2 is boring.

    Hi There & Welcome
Don't believe to much of the bad press you hear about these cars on here, it mainly comes from people who would like to own one
The Aus mk2 GTI were down on power a bit to the Euro versions, but that can be easily rectified at a low cost.
Most of the power gains can be made by replacing 1 small section of the exhaust system

You hear lots of talk about smaller valves & a different ECU on this forum but I have not been able to find any documentation any where to back this up.

Being a 1991 model, it is of a much higher build quality than an earlier versions. They have a lot of modern extras like central locking power mirrors, A/C & power steering but still have the light weight feel of a mk1 with much better cornering ability
There were only 200 mk2's brought into Aus all of the the same GTI's & with the mk2 Golf being the most significant golf ever made, these GTI's are bound to be a classic/collectors car
Overall it is a very strong, reliable & economical car to run.
I hope this helps & good luck with the buying

Hey guys, thanks for the warm welcome and the info The 8V wont scare me away, i was just curious to as i only knew of the 16V German version So swapping the head and changing exhaust should give me some more punch? Do you guys reckon the asking price of 6500 for a mk2 gti with 113k kma and service record since new sound ok? Regards and thanks again, Stef

If its a legit 113,000ks and service record then yeah 6500 sounds good, as long as the rest of the car is in mint condition. Should be prity good at 113ks
