    A few probs please help

    Hey
    car = 1991 Mk2 GTI 5dr (Auto)
first of all i love my golf.. but lately its been driving me nuts.. Can anyone shed some light on the following probs please. I have seriously been thinking of saying good bye to the old fella but just dont want to some one please help and turn my frustration around

    1. It idles funny, when i get off the gas and come to a stop it sorta splutters and then picks back up to idle just under 1g...

    2. When i brake and it hits a few bumps the car darts on way then the next .

    3. when stopped trans in D and foot on the brake i can feel the pedals sorta shaking, i can also (to me anyway) sounds like the engine is shaking and something not on right ?

    4. Temp guage stopped working last week...

Can any one help me or give me suggestions on whats wrong in each instance and cost of fixing..

    thankyou

Temp gauge could be the sender in the top hose. Should be a black one not blue, or the wiring.

Bad idle could be a duff idle stabilisation valve, cleaning often helps, carb cleaner. Also you should check the base idle setting. Read up in a Haynes on doing that. Oil residue on the ticker screw in the throttle body.

Diving about under braking could be ball joints, wishbone bushes, tyre pressures, steering rack joints.

Check your front engine mount, the die all the time. You get a big clunk as you set off if it's really bad.

Seriously your top mounts are out to lunch hence braking steer. You can replace these with passat ones as used on the G60.

Clearly you have a temp sensor issue although something is rooted if a digi won't idle...

Take it to Matt is my advice!

i was planning to attend the nats on 25th,so maybe i can hold out till then ? if anyone can take a look at it when down there that would be wicked..

Yea my ol grey GTI had oodles of similar issues. The gearbox mount had completely sheared and would shudder horribly when reversing. My top strut mounts had also totally collapsed and if i jacked the front up i could literally wobble the whole strut and wheel around by about 3cm!! Fix it asap or you'll end up like me and crashing over a curb coz you cant turn a corner and stop in an emergency!!!!
It might also be worth lookin at the rear axle bushes, as they form the pivot point for the rear susp. If they are stuffed the rear axle can move about and sort of steer itself around as you drive! They'd have to be totally knackered to cause that tho..
I'd just check all the bushes to be sure especially the rear mounting bush on the front wishbones.
Maybe the torque converter causing the vibration thru the pedals? Or engine/gearbox mounts?
And i dont know of many k-jet cars that havent had the bouncy idle prob!
My new car is digi, and it still does it..

    i have problems too!

This seems like the place to post this, since i have the exact same car and it's broken too. I have two red golfs and both are off the road! Grr.
Anyway, about 3 weeks ago I parked my mk2 overnight at a mates place, and then about 18 hours later tried to drive it away but it wouldnt go. The starter motor is working, the battery is very much charged, the coilpack is working, the engine will turn over and rev if the accelerator is applied during ignition. But as soon as the ignition is let go, the engine stalls. What do you guys think? The electrics look to have had a few backyard repairs, various bridgings and aftermarket relays for standard equipment, and they're a bit of a mess but were all working fine. Initially my RACQ man told me it was the electrics and that no charge was getting to the coilpack, but we've since decided this wasnt the case. The engine was also running a bit rich it seemed, when it was going, and had quite a rough, inconsistent idle. So... ignition switch? injectors? distributor? I'm a little stuck, my old man has been working with me on it and has a few ideas but we havent really got very far... we keep getting distracted by working on the other broken golf in the garage. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers, Rudiger
