Creaking tailgate lock on my Mk2

    Hi people,

I am posting this to see if any of you had similar issues and how you solved this.

The tailgate lock on my car has been making a very annoying creaking noise for the past 7 months which occurs with every pothole no matter how small that I come across. I reckon that the lock has too much room for maneuvering around. Is there a way of saving it or do I absolutely have to get another one ? See the part responsible for the noise in the photo of the following link (German VW forum) - they haven't solved this so far ...

Cheers guys for your comments !

I had this same issue with a 4wd wagon that I used to own. My simple solution was to wrap electrical tape around the eye part of the mechanism (the U shape looking bit). This simply allowed for a tighter fit and stopped the annoying noise!!! Give it ago, however make sure you don't use to much tape as the boot will not close properly.

The door strikers have a similar type nylon ring around the pin like Major mentioned. I just checked but my tailgate locking pin and there's nothing like that.

    Hi people,

thank you for your posts ! I tried to apply some tape last week but it wouldn't stick due to the oily fat that keeps the mechanism going. If it's not too much to ask, do you have a photo of your solution of where exactly you applied the tape and in what quantity ?

    Cheers mate !
