    Changing Gear box Oil Mk2

I have a 8valve 1990 Built GTi and want to upgrade the gearbox oil to some new Synthetic stuff.
Having trouble trying to find the filler plug. Call me stupid, but my manual is pathetic (Haynes).
Also do I need a specialized tool or can I make a tool in my workshop?
    Any help or tips appreciated!

You'll need a 17mm Hex (Alum) head tool, and quite a bit of leverage from memory.

This is the far left (passenger side) end of the gear box, give's you an idea of where the filler plug is.

AFAIK, you'll need a bit like this, or somthing that can go into a ratchet.(ignore the 12 point spline end shown, for MK3's)
MK2 - *Insert list of dealer purchased extra's/standard features here*
80 series - The MK2's BIG, Sooty, polar opposite...

I never "needed" to change mine but when I did it definitely shifted smoother. Probably a bit nicer on the cogs as well.

Thanks for replies. Will try and track down 17mm hex key now.
I should have bought one with my GAP order... too late now!

Does anyone know if these can be bought at local auto shops? Like Auto Pro or the like?

Cheers Ryan for the diagram! Helps heaps.

If youre stuck for a 17mm hex you can just use a spare wheel bolt. You put the head in and then there is generally enough room to fit a 17mm spanner on there as well. Done it a few times and it works fine.
