I find it much more enjoyable driving an old classic then a new car.
In which case, definitely go for the mk2. If I had to get a car for under $5k I'd get a mk2 (well I did a few years ago).

And there are heaps of mods available to keep you happy

Again, thank you to all. I think my mind is made up to go for one. Now the problem is trying to find one.

If anyone knows of one in Vic, please let me know.

Seems an odd thing to say if you haven't had any dramas.

I've had my mk2 for 10 years, driven hard and daily for 8 of the 10 years, had I not modified it I would have basically had no issues with it.

Can't say I know of any around for sale. But if they do seem a little loose or tired don't fear as some new bushes and bearings are a relatively cheap way to have an awesome little car.

Well, I said I've had no major issues, which doesn't mean no issues... it seems I didn't knock on wood hard enough as the alternator and a/c compressor have decided to die today and last week respectively, also had some issues with unstable idling, stalling and other miscellaneous electrical problems previously (whereas the e30 has been extremely reliable the 3 year I've had it).

Don't get me wrong I love my Golf, but again in my opinion old BMWs, e30s in particular, are more reliable, that's all.

    - On the lookout for another E30 325i Coupe, Manual (red would be nice)...

Well, our Mk 2 does 100km a day mon to fri from the Barossa to Adelaide with no problems. It's up to 450000 km's now as well!! It is 1z Tdi powered though and I fitted power steering so it's fast, easy to drive and fuel efficient to! Can't beat it!

I daily drive my MK 2 every day, now that my wife has left me and taken the MK 5!

Anyway, my MK 2 is 100% reliable and I drive typicaly 50-100km per day and sometimes up to 300km per day. Never a problem. I have daily driven the car for about 1 1/2 years now.

I replaced the old GTI engine back in January this year just because I could, and it is now fitted with a MK 3 2.0, but still the original auto box (until it goes bang!). Everything works fine, even the cable speedo. The AC works fine, the power steering etc, it's all good. As things do get a bit knackered over time I do replace or upgrade as required though, hence the MK 3 engine and also the MK 3 front brakes, hubs etc.

A good reliable car in my mind. Simple to work on, easy to get parts for (mechanicaly) and it is a something a bit odd on the road in Adelaide so that is good I think.

It appears to me that mk2's are as rare as hens teeth!

I have been looking for a while and haven't seen any in Victoria. As a result I have had to widen the scope. So now I am looking for either a mk1 or mk2. If I don't find one soon my wife will find a car for me!

It's just like economy cycle mate, sometime Mk2 just flood the market. You just have to be in patient, Mk1 is not a good choice for daily car.

A good alternative for your consideration => http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...ale-67055.html

or PM GolfLoon to see if he still got his 2 doors Mk2.
