Brakes only slow you down.
Hi everyone,
Just got back from overseas and collected my car, lovely drive home apart from having pretty much no brakes!!!
After nursing my baby home, found a spring had popped out from in the pedal cluster or near abouts.
The plastic retainer ( I'll add a photo soon) slides into the spring and has a clip or ball joint holder on the other end.
I'm guessing this is why my brakes have no spring?
I have a part number, but would really love to have the car back on the road by the weekend as I have plans.
Any ideas?
I tried gluing it and clamping in a vice, but looks not so solid.
If I have a chance I might try to get the part machined in aluminum.

Where's the picture you promised so we can see what you are talking about?
And welcome back. Must be good getting back into the Golf (even without brakes).
Really good to drive it again, although the heavy rain we have been having( and lack of brakes) has meant more time looking at it than driving it!
Localized flooding in the northern rivers today! but the sun came out so hopefully the weekend looks better.
The internet where I'm staying is crap, so photobucket was refusing to let me add the link.
Here's the photo-

As a temp measure can you use rubber bands to pull the pedal back into position? Loop them over the pedal and around something under the dash up high. Not ideal but it means you can still drive.
Well it turns out, the spring is actually off the clutch!!!
2 things happened- car hasn't been driven for a year and has air in the brakes and the clutch return spring plastic retainer clip thingy snapped.
Will bleed the brakes tomorrow and try to sort out how to compress the spring enough to get it back on.

So you made me crawl under the dash last night, in the rain, twisting my poor old fragile body looking for your brake spring FOR NOTHING!!!
Bloody Queenslanders............... back in the country for only 1 day and already causing trouble
Let us know how you go. Hope it's a 5 hour job to get the spring back on and you get a hernia.
