I've already lined up a cheap Mazda Eunos as my daily (1.8 V6). There's no way my wife would let me look at another old Golf and at least the Mazda has an airbag. Wish the MK2 did too as the impact on my breastbone is pretty painful. Makes me walk like an old man.
Would be good if you could save the engine- would be perfect for your mk1 !

    Hope your getting better mate.

I finally managed to have a good look at the damage.

The chassis rails didn't take much impact so should be good and the suspension towers aren't damaged. It could probably get back on the road but it's going to take a lot of time and a lot of money. If I didn't have the MK1 I'd probably fix it.

So instead I'll take all the good bits and make the MK1 that I've always wanted.

What's left of the MK2 will be parked at Mums and who knows, maybe one day I might decide to get it back on the road.

With that kind of damage, the shape of chassis can't be judged by eye I believe. Good thing about rural life style is you have unlimited space to store parts and shell

You're right, until I strip it back I can't tell what the real damage is but at least it isn't as bad as I first thought.

With 100 acres out at Mums I just need to remember where I put things so I don't loose them.

That will teach me next time to leave the keys with the car after an accident so it can be moved.

Took off some of the bent bits to see if the engine would run before transplanting it into the MK1.

Check out how much the brake reservoir pushes into intake pipe. Shows how much the chassis has twisted.

The engine turned over and ran but there's something pushing onto the timing belt so it was only a short to make sure there's nothing wrong inside it.

Next step - engine and gearbox out then I need to work out what to do with the shell.
