Nice thread mate, provided quite a good read with a few laughs too.

    How's the 16V coming along?

Hey RedMk2GTi, do you know if this kit is wired the same as needed for the gti?
It looks like the same plugs for the main H4's but not sure about the High beams.

if I need to do it now I'd buy this H4 H4 Headlight Black Booster Wire Harness Bywg | eBay.

Golfmeup, I didn't use that kit, I just saw some UK MK2 forum people use that. That sell has other wiring kit, you can check it out.
I wired my headlight relay 4 years ago myself, iirc i didn't bother high beam as I don't use it a lot.

16v is still sitting in my mate's shed. I've got a few things to sort out before getting round to fitting it but it should be in soon

I wired one relay for low beam and another for high beam. I was lazy so the spot lights come on with high beam because I use high beam a lot every night for the 1 hour drive home on country roads.

I use high beam a lot also- so I will be wiring up with the main beams.
After hitting a kangaroo in the mk2 , I'm keen to have as much spread of light as possible.

I took a gamble( for $9) and bought the ebay wiring loom, I'm sure they are cheaply made but will have to see when it arrives.

Here's the damage done the other night when the bonnet flew open at 100 ks.

The bonnet needs to be straightened after it tried to bend itself over the roof. The 2 bolts which hold the catch to the bonnet came out so there wasn't anything stopping the bonnet from opening.

I need a new windscreen too. At least it's only on the passenger side so there's no immediate rush to replace it. Anyone know where I can find a cheap one?

It's not the end of the world and the weird thing is the car is getting better fuel economy. Seems with the bonnet open slightly it must have been creating more drag. Now that it's tight again it rolls further (I use angel gear a lot going down hills).

So apart from the Mad Max look the Golf is still driving great every day. Heater comes on hot and strong and the new wiring for the lights make driving home each night a real pleasure. Now I can see the wombats and roos before they get too close and I don’t have to wear a jacket and gloves for the 90 k drive each way.

My wife wasn’t sympathetic when I told her about the bonnet flying open. She said I should expect things like that with a 24 year old car. Maybe I should but that doesn’t negate the fact that it’s still a fantastic car to drive and leaves everyone behind on the corners.

    Love it.

    Cheers

    Paul

Good to hear the damage is not too drastic. Bonnet looks like it might be ok with a bit of massaging and a new lick of paint.
I'll keep an eye out on the forums for windscreen for you.
Wives will never understand the attachment us guys have with our older cars.
