    Top stuff Paul!
    The fun begins.

How's the wife treating you? Or is the car being parked out of sight?

One of my mates and his brother decided to surprise their dad for his birthday - they restored a V8 Holden VC in their Garage without him knowing they managed to keep it a secret for half a year, while they were rebuilding it. A big garage and a decent car cover helped.

She's only just started speaking to me after finding out last Wednesday and I no longer have to make sandwiches for my dinner.

Found another problem. The car died a couple of times taking the kids to school yesterday. School is less than 2 ks away so this happens when cold. Each time it started 1st time on the key and ran fine going back home but it looks like I might have to run an auxiliary +ve wire to the pump to make sure it doesn't happen again.

    Hmmm.
Might be a simple one Paul if it's only happening when cold?

Fixed it. Plug came off the back of the throttle body.

Because I have been tinkering and only taking the car for short drives around the block it was working fine when cold but as soon as she warmed up she would only idle. As soon as I tried to accelerate she would stall. Also for that short spurt while warming up the car had less power and I thought this is a pretty slow car. Now it pulls like a 16 year old!

Now here's the weird bit. The radio hasn't worked for a couple of days - no power. Now that the plug is back on the throttle body the radio works again. Also, if the ventilation knob (which chooses where the air goes - face, feet, screen) is slid all the way to the left the radio doesn't work. The heater/ventilation fan has 4 speeds and it doesn't have an off position. The only way I can stop the fan working is to slide the ventilation knob all the way to the left so guess where the radio is taking it's power from. That's going to be changed.

Tomorrow I'll drive her to work, wish me luck.

    Cheers

Sounds like a spare fuse wasn't utilized in the fuse box!!
Never heard of it being connected to the fan though.

Glad you sorted the engine running issues, nice say fix!!

Good luck with the drive to work! I'm sure you'll be just fine

Got to work and back (162 k's) without any issues but the car has heaps of creaks and rattles. I won't say the suspension is stiff but if I run over a 20c piece I can tell if it's heads or tails.

The easiest way to fix all the noises is to turn up the radio but the wiring for the radio continues to amaze me. It only works if the ignition is on and the heater controls are also turned on. When the heater fan is turned on the radiator fan comes on as well. Great trick for getting the engine cooler when it's hot in traffic but not in the middle of winter when I want the heater on.

This weekend I'm doing some rewiring I think.

    Cheers

    What's this black goo?

I pulled out the beesting aerial out of my 97 Polo, together with over 2 metres of cable and where it was connected to the radio there was a FM amplifier covered in what looks and feels like soft tar. There was another blob covering the connections. Should I be using it when I put the aerial in the Golf?

Raining all day today so no work on the car.

Braidwood show was also on so it was a family day. My daughter managed to win a few ribbons for her horse riding, she even managed to get a Reserve Champion (2nd outright). Not bad for a 13 year old.
