I bought a 9a + 020 gbox out of, would you believe, a MK1. Bought it for a song but it probably needs a refresh.

The 9a is a 2 litre 16v and puts out around 130 hp compared to 150 for the (almost identical) ABF motor. The reason I went 9a is max torque is at 3500 rpm compared to 4600 for the ABF engine. Most of my driving is around 3000 rpm so the 9a is a nicer package for me. I don't want big horsepower because there are a lot of police on my road to work. I also want something that I have to work hard to overtake other cars - that's half the fun.

I'll sell you the RA's as soon as I find something to replace them.

    9a - nice!

Torque is always best for hilly and windy roads.
This thing is going to rock! 130hp compared to 95hp
Are you going to rebuilt it yourself Paul?

I'm so keen to get back home and start playing with my mk2 again.

mmmm, I did a photoshop of RA's on my car.

Mate of mine is a VW mechanic so he'll do the rebuild.

130hp AND 180 Nm compared to 140 Nm is the bit that I like. At the moment my 8v 2 litre can do all the big hills in 5th but it struggles to accelerate up them if I have to overtake. 4th is ok but 3rd is great. I'm lazy and would like to be able to keep it in 5th.

Wish I could do a 2door build on mine and get the 4door running and in such state that it is reliable... Already sold the motor of the 4door, just gotta pull it out for the new owner.

It's going to be dedicated LPG so all I need is a manifold. If I can afford it I'll upgrade the cams, do some porting and up the compression to 14:1 to take advantage of the 105 octane LPG. I'd be more than happy with 150 hp + lots of low down torque.

I've had seriously quick cars in the past and all they do is eat your licence. Here's me with my Bolwell Nagari back in the early 80's. It had a 302, then I wanted more power so in went a 351, then a heavily worked 289 with quad 48IDA's. The car weighed 980 kg.

    Not good news.

The oil leak goes for another 2 ks before the oil light and buzzer came on. Oil was pouring out of the oil filter. Turned out the oil cooler had a split O ring. These use water to cool the oil and are known to be unreliable so I took it off and fitted the filter direct to the oil filter housing. Just needed a shorter centre shaft from a MK1.

You can see the longer centre piece on the right with the short one fitted. The oil cooler is below.

    Now the good news.

Similar thing happened to mine, although, the seal/oring on mine failed a lot less suddenly.
Hope there wasn't any damage done.

It gave me a chance to replace the oil (twice) and put on a new filter. The engine now idles 200 rpm higher and is quieter.

She's a funny car, makes me smile a lot. Loves to be driven hard, hates sitting behind other cars on the freeway, likes attention. How do I know? She uses less fuel when I drive hard and overtake other cars and little problems fix themselves. The only time I've had something serious go wrong it's nothing that can't be fixed in a few hours.
