Fixed the drivers door so it could be unlocked (window channel was in the way of the key mechanism). Took a lot of time and 3 door handles to work out why it wasn't working.

The radio was getting poor reception so I took the adapter piece off the white MK2 so the aerial fits correctly in the back of the radio.

Interior light wasn't coming on when the drivers door was open. All the other doors worked so just needed a clean of the door trigger.

Boot light not coming on. Fixed it so well it didn't go off when the hatch was closed. Had to glue a bit of plastic on the pad that pushes the pin in so the pin goes further when closed.

Heater hose split on a plastic pipe between 2 rubber hoses. Replaced it with a metal pipe.

That's it for now, I've run out of little things to fix.

Because it doesn't have airbags it's not the safest car to take the kids to school (100 k drive) so I'll wait until the school holidays before using the MK2 to go to work every day.

    Looking forward to it.
What I wouldn't give to ride in a mk2 to school everyday

Took it for a run to Canberra last weekend, man it is slow up the hills!

I need to find a cheap car for my son so I can claim the MK2 for myself and put in the 2.0 motor and 5 speed. Anyone know where I can find a cheap MK3 auto with lots of rego?

Here's why I didn't bother checking for rust when I bought it. Random pictures taken when I replaced the exhaust for rego.

The 16's I was going to use on the MK1 will now go on the MK2.

The MK1 will get these 15's which I think will look classier on the MK1 than the 16's.

They are Audi wheels redrilled for 4 stud. Someone did a good job and I hate to think what it cost.

I'll post some pix with the new wheels when I get the Golf back from a mate. I loaned the car to him to help him out.

    16 x 7 with 195/45 rubber.

Even though the outside dia is the same as the standard 14's it looks like there's too much gap between the tyre and wheelarch so I might drop it by a couple of cm.

The bad news is there's water in the oil so the swap to the 2.0 from the white car might be sooner than expected.

    Not having a good week.

Hit a roo with the daily.

So the MK2 had to be put back on the road which meant it needed a new head gasket. It couldn't be driven in this condition. Check out the gunk in the rocker cover.

I think this might be past it's use by date.

I know everyone knows what a MK2 engine bay looks like but check out how restrictive the standard exhaust is. Starts out big bore but a 50c piece could probably block it off.

The car is back on the road and running as good as expected for a 30 year old car with a lazy 1.8 and 3 speed auto. The weird thing is I had to retard the dizzy a few degrees because it was pinging which it wasn't doing before I took off the head.

Since the last post I've done over 13,000 ks without any hassles but the 16's were too harsh on country roads so I've gone back to 14's.

The ride is much nicer and it still corners well. Needs a good clean though.

Going to be selling it soon. Bought this as my daily and I need the money to get the MK1 back on the road.

End of an era. The white MK2 shell has gone to someone who needs it to rebuild another accident damaged MK2.

    No more MK2's.

For the past 8 years it's been sitting in the back yard, providing spare parts for dozens of other MK2's.

The easiest way to get it on the trailer was use an engine hoist to get it as high as possible then reverse the trailer under it.

Took us a few hours but we got it safely on the trailer.

    Now I only have the MK1, MK3, 2 x 4mo Boras and the Tiguan.

    Plus a few non VW's.

Life is tough out in the country.
