1979 Golf Mk1- http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...one-92128.html
For some reason this car just gets better and better. Now that I'm taking the kids to school in Canberra I'm pushing the Golf harder and it's picked up a couple of hp as well as a bit more torque. Even with the extra 100kg (2 x 14 year olds) it going up hills faster than it was last month. Maybe I'm clearing some of the crap that's built up in the exhaust over the years.
I've also passed the 300,000 km mark and looking for some different wheels. I think some steelies like this would be magic.

That was last month. I'm up to 304,000 now.
Epic thread, would read 10/10 :p
Loving the mk1 dude, I can only imagine the mk2 is just as solid!
MK2's are slightly bigger and heavier than MK1's. They feel much more solid and are smoother to drive because they have a subframe so they suit us oldies really well. They are still rough and noisy like a MK1 but I can use mine as a daily without going too insane. Best bit is I can leave neary every other car behind when it comes to the tight corners - love it!
Good to see the work you're doing on your car, looking good.

Nope, didn't fit. The other gearbox is hydraulic and runs a cable shift. Bugger, now I have to put the old gearbox back in and hope it lasts while I source another to suit the MK2.
Anyone got or know someone who has a 5 speed they want to sell cheap?
Cheers
Paul

After a 2 1/2 hour drive this morning I got a gearbox off MK1@4motion in Canberra - thanks Mick. Looks almost identical apart from the connection for the reverse wiring, it has 4 pins compared to 2 on my gearbox. After an hour of wriggling it to fit (I hate putting gearboxes back in by myself) I finally managed to get some bolts in to hold the gearbox tight and started bolting bits and pieces back on. I had a lot of trouble with the left CV until I found the flanges on the new gearbox were smaller than the original gearbox and won't fit the CV's. FOOK!
I'm pretty sure I checked the size before putting the gearbox - maybe I'm getting senile.
NOT HAPPY!
I took the flanges off the old gearbox, unbolted everything from the new gearbox and started to take it out again. Gearbox is now hanging off the engine, it's got stuck somewhere at the back, it's getting dark, it's raining and the mozzies are coming out.
And I just got hit in the head by a bat! I thought those things had radar to see in the dark?
I'm going inside for a drink before I do something I know I will regret.
Cheers
Paul
