Paul sorry to hear about the oil cooler!
Hope you got it sorted ok now.
New wheels look great- really suit your color.
    What are they?
    They look like Audi rims?

The oil leak goes for another 2 ks before the oil light and buzzer came on. Oil was pouring out of the oil filter. Turned out the oil cooler had a split O ring. These use water to cool the oil and are known to be unreliable so I took it off and fitted the filter direct to the oil filter housing. Just needed a shorter centre shaft from a MK1.

You can see the longer centre piece on the right with the short one fitted. The oil cooler is below.

    Now the good news.

My oil cooler also is leaking but not severe, I was wondering how efficient and how necessary is the oil cooler is, my ex Australia released Mk2 doesn't have it, most SA and UK cars have.

When I had the oil cooler working the max temp I'd ever see for the oil was 96, it usually sat around 90. Water temp guage never went above 1/3rd. Yesterday on the way to work I had to stop for roadworks a few times, the oil temp hit 100 and the water went 1/2 way before it started to go back down to normal. Today outside temp was 12 C and the oil and water were back to normal.

I'm not worried by these numbers because it's pretty cold down here compared to Brisbane but I'd think twice before taking the oil cooler off if I lived in Qld and had to do stop/start traffic.

Mine didn't have a slow leak, it worked fine right up until the O ring split sometime overnight with the cold. Saturday I drove to Sydney and back. Monday morning the oil started pouring out as soon as I pulled out of the driveway.

Wheels are aftermarket multi fit. They have more holes than swiss cheese so I'll get all the extra ones tig welded before I put them on the car permanently.

You would have to be running a 45 profile tyre by now wouldn't you Paul?

In summer I've seen the oil temp go up to 110 or so in Brisbane when sitting at traffic lights.

    Usually hovers around 104.

They are approx 25mm larger dia than the 195x50x15's I currently have. I think the 17s fill the wheel arch better and the speedo should give a much more accurate reading with the bigger wheels. The Aussie MK2's have a speedo that's out by about 5%. When mine shows 100 ks it's really doing 96 with the 15's.

The oil cooler not only cools the oil but the water helps to warm the oil up faster when its cold.
