in the jetta bro??and just when the new box was finished
Split a radiator hose, taped it up and filled the water a few times, but big end bearing noise got worse and worse. Stopped before I put the piston through the block, but it doesnt start anymore. Not seized, but no go.
Still it never went as fast as it should have anyway.
On the plus side, I have a 1.9 engine with a lumpy cam and efi in the garage. All is not lost.
Into it tomorrow.

Yup the Jetta. The incomplete engine mount I used was not strong enough and so ripped the water hose.
It wasn`t fast enough and the Audi lump I have here needs to run injection, so guess thats the next job. Plus fixing a stronger engine mount.
Its such a nice car to drive and the gearlinkage was slick, now it just needs more go.
This is what it looked like when I got the rocker cover off. The splash shield has melted and coated the bearings, vaves and camshaft.
I stopped just before the piston came through the block. I wanted to get to the top of the hill, but she would have blown.
I have the two engines on the floor. Work has begun.

Matt what did you do to the poor engine mount. Just replaced all mine and the annoying vibration at 2-2.5rpm has gone pretty much. My gearbox mount was gone and the front one was flexing so.........cheap fix I guess.
But If I'm boring you I sheared my fuel line last week after leaving the cam gear cover off to make adjustments
As you can see I taped it up until I could source 1/4 M of fuel line for $5 LOL. Would have been fine but I got home and a spray of petrol was coating my engine. My extinguisher rode shotgun until the new line was in![]()
The gearbox side mount has 2 parts, a solid bracket from the gearbox that goes over the linkages and an overrider bar that goes to the top mounts on the box.
I need the solid bracket that holds most of the weight. Anyone got one?

Just thought I`d update this post.
Have made a new engine mount for the passenger side from an auto one and a piece of bar and a grinder. Wont break now.
The 1.9 motor is in and the wiring is a nightmare.
Not a simple KJET system, is fully electronic from an audi. I nearly said bugger it and whacked the carby on, but the head is different and has larger holes for injectors which go into the inlet manifold. Getting messy!
And the inlet manifold comes out on the passenger side, not the drivers, so fuel lines and everything is wrong. The fuel meter will have to be on that side, like a Mk1, but in a Mk2. Oh well.
Have new fuel lines and pump and longer injected hoses, from a Mk1 scirocco. Cheers roccodingo. Modified the airbox to snug in behind the battery. Made up an intake boot for now, will make up a nicer one when I have time.
Washer bottle will have to go other side.
System pumps fuel round the system and all is good. Wiring is still like spaghetti junction and dont know if I have all the hoses correct, like the ISV system! And no spark
PHEW
My mate Steve came over the other day, to do the wiring for me. I had the map sensor module missing and a few wires wrong. We got the car making noises and we were defeated by the darkness.
Today I put the front of the car back on, it looks like a car again now, and redid all the hoses and some wiring connectors.
It starts, runs for 5 seconds and then dies. Sounds ok though. I suspect wiring or vacuum.
Anyone got any ideas? Or a wiring diagram for a 1.9 SD motor from a 1988 Audi 80?
Here is close of play today...

Why not get Vibratech engine mounts ? Check them out at

Thanks for the tip and the link, that assumes that I have the metal bracket to connect to the mount and that is the poblem in Australia.
