Bike carbs or similar, Worth it or not?

Been thinking about bike carbs or twin DCOE's on my 8v once it's registered.

    What do you think?

    Good?
    Bad?
    INSANE?
    Waste of money?

what mk 2 do you have?

    import yes, do it
aussie delievered, don't bother. Too much mucking around with emissions etc (blue slip every year no?)

the poms love thier bike carbs, if you're handy with a welder and some pipe, go nuts. A set of bike carbs can be had a bucket load cheaper than a set of twin 40's. you can even buy manifolds (allbeit from OS) for them, to suit bike carbs. hpoe this add some fuel to the fire!

the sound is just the ducks nuts, off the chain

Pete Jones runs a 8v on carbs (his track car), i know of a few back in the uk that ran welll and of course you have the best sound track in the world!!!

bike carbs is abit more tricky as you need to make a manifold up.

but i think head work and cam would be the first thing to do, also you will never get massive power, just a nice torquey engine

I've heard that bike carbs are a nightmare to get right, don't really give that big a power increase and cause your fuel consumption to plummet. On the other hand the look monumentally cool, sound awesome and would be very unique.

As mentioned above head work, a twin weber/dellorto or simple engine conversion would be a better bet. Whack a VR6 in it!

I would, But I like the 4 pot. VR6 woiuld be awesome but not that rare now. It would be a toy more than a daily driver.

    It's a UK import.

How much harder is a VR6 to fit? Hmm.. Wonder if an R32 would work!

I don't like GTI's on carbs and for the amount of work and money involved to get it right the power isn't really worth it imo. You can still get 150hp out of a digi 8v with not a lot of work.

If you can find a vr6 donor it wouldn't be to hard to do the conversion, there are plenty of 'how to's' on the net and if you are handy with a spanner you should be oright. As far as i know the wiring is prity much plug and play.

    Mines Kjet.

BHP is how fast you can go.
Torque is how fast you get there!

VR6 has both. They are common in Europe but not over here....

Details are up on ClubGTI. They have a whole thread dedicated to mk2 2L 8v power figure and times. It takes the usal 2L bottom end, cam, full exhaust and chip but to really make it pop it needs to be ported out 38/40 valve size or even bigger to break the 150hp mark. Thats the key really. At about 145hp you need to upgrade the clutch though.
