    All the good advice is here in the posts.
    The std 8v would pull 0 - 60 in 8.3 secs. Conservative factory figures.
    Thats as quick as today's local sixes can do on a good day.

    The local 8v cars only bog down because they can't breathe. The exhaust system is not the real GTI spec. Get the right pipes and you'll be amazed.

    can anyone substantiate the audi 80 throttle body mod?

    is any bigger than a euro spec throttle body? do i have to attack the inlet manifold with a dremel?

    i want as much air as i can get!! hmm maybe ITB's going through the fuel distributor..? haha what a waste

    Only the MK 1 1600 K-Jet had the small TB.

    The MK2 K-Jets got the bigger audi/neuspeed/eurospec TB.

    53/35 throttle valves from memory.

    OK for all you doubters, this is what we're talking about.

    For comparison, the small downpipe is off a 1800 Cordoba which is about the same as the MK2 down pipe. The other manifolds and downpipes are off a 2E 2.0 8V Vento and an AGG 2.0 8v Golf.

    Buying into this topic rather late but a good place to start on the aussie gti engines is;
    the ebay type chips that reduce digi lag
    BMW 5 series afm
    dual port manifold and downpipe. (see Pete's post above, perfect example for this upgrade)

    Beyond that a eurospec cam and some headwork will obviously free the engine up a bit. The first three things are quite cheap to do and are all bolt on things. I have the ebay chip and a pod atm and it has given it a bit, I have been trying to track down a bmw afm they are quite a bit larger than the standard issue all you need to to do is adjust the spring tension and it goes straight on, same plug and all.

    Some of the chips adjust fueling and the rev limiter, the one i have cuts out the lag and gives it a bit more fuel in the mid range, nothing full on but they are $50 and I have noticed a small difference.

    You should be able to get the dual port manifold and downpipe easilly from the UK or US I have seen them advertised new on some places. I do remember Loon having some though which is easier.

    Vortex 8v faq thread has some useful info, obviously some info will be wrong as US models differ but alot is still relevent.

    Ive got the chip, the bmw maf and k&N panel. The chip gets rid of digi lag but i cant notice much els. The bmw maf isnt that much bigger and on full throttle you cant get it to open 100%.
    My car is realy slugish though, when on full throttle it will spluter and cough and it will stuggle through 4-5k rpm, even in nutral. Its not the maf because i replaced it with the original in the problem was a bit worse rather than better. The temp sender is about 6months old so im not thinking that is the problem. Last thing i can think off is the 02 sensor wich i will replace in the next few weeks when i get the duel down pipe and mani from pete.

    Does your 8v rev smoothly?

    Mine revs fine, you have another problem there.

    Did you adjust the spring rate on the bmw afm? you need to loosen it about 8 clicks the 1.8 doesn't have the vacuum to pull it open at the normal tension.

    Only thing I can think of is the O2 sensor, is it chewing through more fuel since its been sluggish? also have you tried putting the old chip back in to check that?

    Spyda I reckon your car is running super rich. That will explain why it runs badly at full throttle. You can put in more fuel, but if so, you need to make it brethe better.

    i would concur

    i think it would follow that the bmw maf sensor (unadjusted) will not be able to supply correct info to the ecu unless its whole range of motion is used - so the only way to rectify this would be to adjust the spring tension as static1800 has described.


    also, check your leads and ignition timing.... i cant remember if this was stated earlier.


    Static - you were asking about the intake manifilds (pete was referring to the exhaust side)

    there are several intake manifold designs, all have a similar volume plenum, and seem to have similar diameter runners. length of runners does vary - could be used to tune the intake if one were so inclined.
