Basic Service

As I recently picked up my MkII I am going to get it up on the ramps and do a basic service. From what i know/found/guessed I will be doing the following:

Oil - Caltex Magnatec
Replace Oil Filter - Advice Required
Air Filter - Advice Required
Plugs - Bosch FD6+ - Feel Free to Advise

I am at 188,000 kms and the service record is patchy from 140,000 kms and there was signs that Ultratune did a service at 170,000 kms.

Is there anything else i should take into consideration?

its a bit tight down there around the oil filter, pretty hard to get off sometimes. if you didnt know, the front bottom spoiler can clip on and off, its in two parts. i usually just take these off and crawl under. you might have to take them off to get the car on ramps also.

My old mans got a nice set of long ramps...have had it up on them before so should be ok...saw the oil filter...looks like fun

if you have ramps the oil filter is easy to get to...easy with a jack too. usually able to get mine off by just gripping it with both hands.....
unless the last person to put one has done yours up too tight...
if you dont have a remover and its tight, stab it with a screwdriver for leverage ( butchers way but if its all you've got)
dont know bout others but i Use FUCHS oil (keeping it German) lol
MANN filters too. I try to keep everything i use in or on the motor German.

dont forget to lube the rubber seal on the oil filter with some oil too

Benny went to the same school as oil filter removal as me.

If you want to save money just take the plugs out and look at them. It they are ok and not oily or white, they may have been changed recently.
If it aint broke dont fix it.

All others sounds sensible. Have a look at the rubbers on the gearshift mechanism and the engine mounts while you are under there. And CVs.

haha yeah have had to do the Filter Screwdriver shish kebab number a couple of times as well. I have the tool these days, usually less messy

Are the MANN filters readily available at Repco and the likes? Or require more chasing down?

I checked the plugs yesterday and are a tad whitened so will whip them out as well i think.

If coolant is green colour, change it back to purple (G12+) asap.
I have a brand new MANN air filter and fuel filter collecting dust after my Mk2 has gone. MANN is the only filter I'll put in my VW. PM me if you're interested.
