    Which Alternator fits.

    My alternator sounds like its about to kick it. It sounds like its got a big chunck of metal loose inside and clunks around.

    I was wondering if theres a cheap replacement. I read somewhere here that a commo alternator can be used.

    Any advice?

    (Oh and where do i get new belts, ac and alternator belt there about done too)

    You can make any thing fit, but wouldn't you rather have the correct one in there?

    The Genuine ones are Bosch and can easily be serviced.

    Sounds like your bearings are stuffed, you can get an auto sparky to replace them for about $70.

    I'm pretty sure repco should be able to fit you up for a new belt though? probably even a genuine article/genuine model number fit etc etc

    What im looking for is more amps. There is not enough current, the more lights you turn on the dimmer they get and the engine changes its tone when you use more electricity.
    Today it started making the **** sound and I just found out that a bolt is missing that is ment to hold it to the block, no bloody idea how that came off. Ill try to secure it properly and see if that stops the clanking noise, hopefully its not internal and ill upgrade the earth cables to improve the current.

    Later down the track im guna put in the doof doof so better now then have to get another one later.

    I'm going to change to a MK 3 setup with the serpentine belts.
    I think they make 90 Amps.

    I'm changing for the better tensioner and belt setup, but it may mean having to fit a different water pump (Which I have already.) . All the other pulleys have to change too.

    If you just get your stock alternator fixed your lights etc should be fine.

    You might need something bigger if you're planning on a monster stereo, try your auto sparky, they'll probably have a few ideas.

    Early 2L T4 alternator is the same fit as your car, but newer and more powerful.

    Probably easier and cheaper to get your one rebuilt if you need to.

    Cheapest way is just change bearings assuming that's what it is. I changed some in mine a few months back. $15 for the 2.

    Cheers guys, the clunking sound is sorted now, i bought a new bolt and nut and secured everything nice and tight but the problem is now that the belt was loose and could avoid driving the car and now the belt is ****ed.
    If i can find a auto sparky ill have a chat to them about the current, i think that improving the ground wires will solve most of that problem, but thats for another day, ill have a look in to that T4 alt, ill be needing 130+amps .

    Bolt+nut: $3
    New Alt belt: $40
    New A/C belt (unrelated but its ****ed too, not that the a/c works either way): $13

    Total of $56 to get all that crap sorted, alot of money when your a uni student


    Thanks for the help guys. Itll probably be another couple of weeks before ill need it again haha.

    I was in the city today when my battery started smoking.

    I changed the battery ($145 ) and the mechanic checked my alternator, its now over charging, 16+volts. Went to a auto sparky and he said the same thing, $220 to fix it, told him now way.

    Went to pick a part and got a alternator from a cordoba, same as a mk3 i presume?????

    Its guna be a bitch to fit.

    Has anyone got any ideas, hints, tips or info?

    Sounds like you've got a couple of not so uncommon problems. The first (dim lights) is probably caused by excessive voltage drop. That is - too much resistance between the switch and the lights. This happens through normal age related degradation in the loom and connections. Putting relays behind the lights is a better solution than trying to put more current through the switch. There is also a wiring patch offered on ebay from time to time (made by some guy in the UK) that is supposed to allieviate the problem.

    The problem with the missing alternator bolt is caused by sloppy work earlier in the life of the car - leaving the bolt looser than it should be. With the bolt not tightened properly the alternator can move under load. Over time the bolt hole through the alternator becomes worn oval. From then on its very hard to know when you tighten the bolt, if you have the alternator correctly aligned. If it isn't, then the bolt becomes loose again and the hammering it receives every time you go and come off the throttle will sheer it eventually. Sometimes you'll hear the two halves of the sheered bolt hit the road as if they've been fired from a canon. There are two solutions: Get a new alternator or have the bolt hole through the body bored and sleeved in the correct alignment so the bolt is again a snug fit in the hole.
